In the sweltering summer of 1963, seven-year-old Elsie was exploring the cluttered attic of her grandmother’s farmhouse. The attic was a treasure trove of forgotten relics, but what caught her eye was a dusty, leather-bound journal with a strange symbol embossed on the cover. As she opened it, a faint scent of mothballs and old paper wafted out, but then, from nowhere, a much stronger smell—like burnt tobacco and damp earth—filled the air. Elsie looked up, and standing at the top of the attic stairs, was the figure of a man. He wore a dark brown suit that seemed too heavy for the season, a cream shirt, and a bow tie with a peculiar pattern—spiders in a web. His face was in shadow, but she felt his eyes on her.

Elsie froze, then shouted, ‘Who are you?’ The man said nothing, only tilted his head as if listening. Elsie dropped the journal and scrambled down the stairs, screaming for her mother and grandmother. They found her trembling in the kitchen, and she stammered out what she had seen. As she spoke, she pointed to the stairway, and there he was again, the man, descending slowly, his hand gripping the banister. Her mother and grandmother saw nothing, but her brother and young cousin, who had come running at the commotion, both gasped and pointed too. ‘He’s real!’ her cousin whispered.

Her grandmother, a practical woman with a sharp memory, asked Elsie to describe him in detail. ‘Dark brown suit, cream shirt, and a bow tie with spiders on it,’ Elsie said. The grandmother’s face went pale. She walked to the foot of the stairs, her eyes fixed on a spot just above the bottom step, and said in a low, steady voice, ‘I think it’s Uncle Henry.’ At the sound of that name, the man stopped, then, as if in slow motion, he turned and walked back up the stairs, dissolving into the shadows.

Later that evening, the grandmother explained. Uncle Henry had been a traveling salesman who had disappeared in 1929, the year the stock market crashed. He had been a formal man, always wearing that spotted bow tie, and he had a habit of sneaking into the attic to read his journal—a journal that was never found. The family had assumed he had run off, but some said he had died in a distant town, and his ghost had never found its way home. For years, Elsie would sometimes catch a whiff of that burnt tobacco and damp earth, especially in the attic, and she knew her grandmother’s last words to her before she passed were not a comfort: ‘He’s still looking for something, dear. And he doesn’t like being disturbed.’
