It was late October when we moved into the old farmhouse on Hemlock Road. The previous owners had left in a hurry, and the place had a musty, forgotten smell that clung to every room. My husband, Tom, and I had two young kids, Emily and Jack, and we were determined to turn it into a home despite the creaky floors and drafty windows. The first few weeks were chaos—paint cans in the living room, boxes stacked in the hallway, and the constant sound of drills and hammers. The kids seemed to love the adventure, but I often felt a chill that had nothing to do with the autumn air.

One evening, after we’d settled into a routine, Emily came down to breakfast with a worried look. ‘Mommy, I saw a man in the hall last night,’ she said, her voice small. ‘He was standing by the linen closet, all in black. I got scared and hid under my covers.’ I glanced at Tom, who shrugged it off. ‘Must have been a shadow or the boxes,’ he said, reassuringly. I knelt down and hugged her. ‘It was probably a dream, sweetheart. There’s no one else here.’ But as I looked down the L-shaped hallway, a strange unease settled in my chest.

The days passed, and the house began to feel more like ours. We painted the living room a soft yellow and hung family photos on the walls. But at night, I’d often wake to the sound of floorboards groaning above us, as if someone were pacing. Tom would sleep through it, but I’d lie there, listening, telling myself it was just the old house settling. Then, a few nights ago, I saw it myself. I was walking to the bathroom, half-asleep, when I caught a glimpse of a tall figure in black slipping around the corner of the hallway, just out of sight. My heart hammered as I called out for Tom. He came running from the living room, but when we checked, the hall was empty. ‘It’s nothing, hon,’ he said, but his eyes were wary.

That same night, I couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched. Emily’s light was on, and I padded softly to her room. She was sitting up in bed, her face pale. ‘Mommy, I heard footsteps outside my door,’ she whispered. ‘Like someone was walking back and forth, waiting.’ I pulled her close, feeling her small body tremble. ‘It’s the house settling, Em. Nothing to be afraid of.’ But as I tucked her back in, I noticed a dark shape in the doorway, just a silhouette, and my blood ran cold. I blinked, and it was gone.

Now, as I write this in the dead of night, the house is silent except for the wind outside. Emily and Jack are asleep in their rooms, and Tom is snoring beside me. But I just heard it—a soft thud from the hallway, and the sound of something dragging across the floor. I know I shouldn’t go out there, but I have to know. I creep to the edge of the bed and peer out the door. The hall is empty, but at the end, I see a faint shimmer, like a heat haze, and then a shape materializes, tall and black, with no face. I hold my breath as it turns toward me, and then, in a voice that sounds like whispering dust, it says, ‘You can see me now.’ I slam the door and lock it, but I can already hear the footsteps approaching, slow and deliberate, right outside. I press my back against the headboard, praying for sunrise, but the thought that it might never come terrifies me more than anything in this dark, hollow house.
