Elliot hadn’t slept well in weeks. The new apartment, a cramped studio in a converted warehouse, was supposed to be a fresh start after his breakup, but the old building seemed to hold onto every sound. Last night, he lay in bed, the digital clock on his nightstand mocking him with its red glow — 2:14 AM, 2:37 AM, 2:52 AM. His mind refused to shut down, replaying arguments and apologies.

Just as he felt the familiar tug of unconsciousness, a sound sliced through the silence. It wasn’t the hum of the refrigerator or the distant traffic; it was a melody, soft and lilting, like a lullaby. A girl’s voice, high and sweet, sang words he couldn’t quite make out, but the tune was strangely familiar, like something from a forgotten dream. Elliot sat up, his heart thumping against his ribs. The room was dark, the only light coming from the streetlamp outside, casting long shadows across his cluttered floor. The singing continued, seemingly coming from the corner near his closet.

He grabbed his phone, thinking it might be a notification or a weird ringtone, but the screen showed no missed calls. The singing didn’t come from the phone. He set it back down, his hand trembling. Maybe it was from the neighbor’s apartment? The walls were thin, and he often heard muffled conversations and TV shows. But this was too clear, as if someone was right there, whispering into his ear.

Elliot tried to ignore it, lying back down and closing his eyes. He focused on the rhythm of his breath, trying to drift. But then, a weight pressed down on his chest, heavy, like a lead blanket. He tried to move, to push it off, but his limbs felt paralyzed. The pressure increased, spreading to his neck, pinning him to the mattress. He couldn’t speak or even scream. The room seemed to tilt, and the singing grew louder, more insistent.

A rustling sound came from the foot of his bed, like fabric being dragged across the floor. Elliot’s eyes darted toward it, but he saw nothing — just the outline of his laundry basket and a pair of shoes. Yet he felt a presence, a warmth that shouldn’t have been there. His head was then forced to the side, so sharply that his neck popped. He gasped silently, the pressure turning to a sharp pain. He was being twisted, his head turning almost completely around, and he could see the closet door slightly ajar — behind it, a patch of darkness that seemed to breathe.

Just as he felt consciousness slipping, a noise from the hallway snapped him free. The pressure vanished. He sat up, gasping for air, drenched in sweat. The room was normal — the clock showed 3:21 AM, and his phone buzzed with a low battery warning. He listened for the singing, but it was gone. Yet, he noticed his pillow was damp, and on the wall above his headboard, scratched into the paint, was a pattern that looked like music notes, fresh and raw.

He never slept in that apartment again, but even after he moved, he’d catch himself humming that melody, and sometimes, in quiet moments, he’d feel a weight on his chest, and hear a faint rustling at the foot of his bed, as if something had followed him, waiting to finish its song.
