The old farmhouse on Cedar Lane had always been a place of quiet unease, but after the incident with the basement door, it became a living thing with its own agenda. My name is Samuel, and I live here with my parents, Ruth and Harold. We are not a family given to flights of fancy, so when strange things began to happen, we had no choice but to accept them.

The first sign was the wardrobe in my parents’ bedroom. It was a massive, antique piece of furniture, dark oak with brass fittings, and its doors had heavy iron locks that clanked and grated when turned. They were so stiff that even Harold, a sturdy man, had to struggle with them. Yet, one evening, as we all sat in the living room on the second floor, a series of sharp, metallic clicks echoed from the master bedroom. It sounded like someone was methodically testing each lock, turning them this way and that, then letting them snap back. We all froze, listening. Harold got up to check, but when he opened the bedroom door, the wardrobe was still, the locks untouched. That became a nightly ritual, the clicking and clanking, sometimes in the dead of night, but we never caught the culprit.

Months passed, and the sounds grew bolder. We began to hear dragging noises from the same room, a heavy, scraping sound as if someone was pulling a corpse across the floorboards. It was so loud that the floorboards vibrated beneath our feet. Yet when we entered, the room was pristine, the wardrobe in its place, the rug undisturbed. My mother, Ruth, started sleeping in the guest room, claiming the noise gave her migraines. I would wake in the middle of the night to hear her pacing, and sometimes, I would hear a faint, rhythmic scratching from within the wardrobe, like nails on wood.

Then, one night, Harold was away on business. Ruth and I were alone in the house. I was reading in my room when I heard the clicking start, more frantic than ever. I walked to my parents’ room and pressed my ear to the door. The locks were clicking in a pattern, not random, almost like a code. I felt a cold dread seep into my bones. I turned the doorknob; it was unlocked. I pushed the door open. The room was bathed in moonlight, and the wardrobe stood there, its doors slightly ajar. A dark shape was visible within, a silhouette that seemed to breathe. I took a step closer, my heart pounding. The shape moved, and I saw a pale hand with long, black nails emerge, gripping the edge of the door. It pushed the door further open, and a figure stepped out—a woman in a tattered white dress, her face gaunt and her eyes hollow. She looked at me, and her mouth opened, but no sound came out. Instead, a low, guttural whisper filled the room, a voice that seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere, saying, ‘You should have left when I was only knocking.’

The wardrobe doors slammed shut with a thunderous bang, and the locks clicked into place one by one. I backed away, my legs trembling. The house fell silent, but I knew something had changed. The spirits had grown tired of playing with locks and dragging the ghost of their past. They wanted us to leave, or they would find a way to make us stay forever. That night, I didn’t sleep. I sat by the window, watching the dark outline of the wardrobe through the door, and I knew that the horror had only just begun.
