The Lock That Turned Alone

Our family had just moved into the old house, and my partner, a builder, was fixing it up. The work was going well until we finished the main repairs. That was when the trouble began.

The front door lock, which we had just replaced, became incredibly stubborn. We had to push against it with all our weight just to get it to open. It was easier to just use the side door, even though the front was closer to the street.

One evening, we were all in the den near that front door. It was locked, but the handle suddenly twisted and the door swung inward on its own. Later that night, my partner went out to get groceries while I stayed with our children, who were three and eight. I was in the kitchen, cleaning up after dinner.

I heard the front door handle rattle. I almost went to open it, thinking it was my partner returning, but they had a key. Then I heard a voice, soft and gentle like a mother speaking to a child, say, “Is anyone home?” I hurried into the children’s room and closed the door tight.
