Marla had always thought the smell of lavender was grandmotherly, but after what happened, she couldn’t stand it. It was the day before the anniversary of her mother’s death, and Marla was determined to clean the house from top to bottom, a ritual she’d adopted to keep her grief at bay. She started with the spare bedroom, the one her mother had used when she was alive, which Marla still called ‘Mama’s room’ even though no one had slept in it for years. She found a bottle of lavender air freshener in the cabinet under the sink, but as soon as she sprayed it, the scent brought back memories of her mother’s final days, and she quickly put it back, swapping it for a lemon-scented cleaner that she’d never liked either, but at least it didn’t trigger her.

With the lemon cleaner in hand, Marla walked past the open door of the spare room, heading for the bathroom to refill her bucket, when she caught a movement out of the corner of her eye. She turned, and there, standing in the doorway of the spare room, was her mother. Marla froze, her heart pounding. She saw her mother from the waist up, wearing a faded floral housecoat that Marla had thrown away years ago, her gray hair pinned up in a loose bun. For a moment, Marla thought she was hallucinating, that the grief had finally cracked her mind, but then her mother’s lips parted, and she whispered, ‘The linen closet.’ Then the image vanished.

Marla dropped the cleaner, the bottle clattering on the hardwood floor, and stumbled back against the wall. She was trembling, tears in her eyes. She wanted to run, to call her husband, to scream, but a strange compulsion made her look toward the linen closet at the end of the hall. She had never been afraid of that closet, but now it seemed darker, as if the door was pulling her in.

She took a hesitant step forward, then another, her bare feet cold on the floor. She reached the closet door, her hand hovering over the brass knob. She could hear her own heartbeat in her ears, a dull thud that seemed to echo in the silence of the house. She turned the knob and pulled the door open. Inside, the shelves were empty except for a single linen sheet, neatly folded, on the top shelf. At least, that’s what she saw at first. But as she looked closer, she noticed the sheet was not just a sheet; it was stained with something dark and reddish-brown, and there was a faint coppery smell.

Marla’s blood ran cold. She reached up, her fingers trembling, and touched the stain. The sheet was cold and slightly damp, and as her fingers made contact, she felt a jolt like an electric shock. She yanked her hand back, and in that instant, she heard her mother’s voice again, but this time it was inside her head, screaming, ‘Get out! Get out of the house!’

Marla stumbled backward, tripping over the threshold, and scrambled to her feet. She ran for the front door, not looking back, and burst out into the daylight. She collapsed on the front porch, gasping for breath, her mind reeling. She didn’t know what she had seen or what had come over her, but she knew she had to leave, and she never stepped foot in that house again.

Years later, when the house was being sold, they found a hidden compartment in the linen closet, behind the back panel. Inside were old photographs and letters, suggesting that Marla’s mother had been hiding something, something she had never told anyone. And on the back of the last letter, in her mother’s shaky handwriting, were the words, ‘I never meant for it to happen. I’m so sorry.’

Marla never learned what ‘it’ was. But sometimes, in the quiet hours of the night, she still smells lemons, and she hears her mother’s voice, not as a whisper but as a clear, desperate plea, and she knows that some secrets are better left in the closet.
