Northwood School in Cedar Valley was an ordinary place with ordinary students and ordinary teachers. It closed last spring when too few students enrolled. The building stood empty for months until Riverbend Elementary needed to use it during roof repairs.

I volunteered with a few others to prepare the classrooms. We worked all day, sweeping floors and wiping down desks. By evening, the others had gone home. I stayed behind to finish organizing the science room.

When I finally stepped into the hallway, I heard soft footsteps behind me. I turned around, but the corridor was empty. I thought my friends might be playing a joke. “Okay, you got me,” I called out. I kept walking, and the footsteps returned, closer this time.

I hurried toward the exit, then heard a clear voice call my name from the far end of the hall. A sudden chill filled the air, and I felt an urgent need to leave. I didn’t look back as I pushed through the front doors into the evening light.
