In the autumn of 2022, my paranormal investigation team was contacted by a distraught man named Elias Thorne. He owned a sprawling estate in the remote hills of West Virginia, where he had attempted to build a family retreat. But construction was halted after a series of disturbing events—workers reported hearing ghostly hymns and the clanging of a school bell from the unfinished buildings, even though the property was miles from any town. Elias believed the land was cursed by a malevolent entity, and he begged us to cleanse it.

We arrived at the site on a crisp October evening. The estate was vast, dotted with two skeletal structures: a half-built main lodge and a smaller outbuilding that looked like a converted chapel. The air was heavy, charged with an unnatural stillness. As we unloaded our equipment, I felt a creeping dread, a sensation I had come to trust over years of investigations. This was not going to be a routine job.

The trees around the property were bare, their branches reaching like skeletal fingers toward a bruised purple sky. There was no sign of life—no birds, no insects, not even a rustle of leaves. The quiet was oppressive, broken only by the distant howl of a dog. We set up our base in the main lodge, which was nothing more than a concrete shell with gaping windows and doorways. The wind whistled through, carrying a faint, musical hum that raised the hair on my neck.

As night fell, the sounds began. At first, it was a low murmur, like a distant conversation. Then it swelled into a cacophony of voices—women laughing, children crying, and the braying of donkeys. The sounds seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere, echoing off the walls of the empty buildings. We shone our flashlights into the darkness, but saw nothing. The property was isolated, with no neighboring farms for miles. The source of these noises was a mystery.

We decided to investigate the chapel-like outbuilding. Inside, it was surprisingly intact. Pews were arranged in neat rows, facing a raised altar. Dust covered everything, but there were no cobwebs—as if something had been keeping the place clean. On the altar sat an old brass handbell, its handle worn smooth. It seemed out of place, too pristine for the decay around it. I reached out to touch it, but my partner, Mara, stopped me. ‘Don’t,’ she said, her voice tight. ‘There’s something wrong here.’

We explored the rest of the building, finding a small room at the back with a door that was firmly shut. Despite our efforts, it wouldn’t budge, as if locked from the inside. As we turned to leave, we heard a faint ringing behind us. It was the handbell, chiming on its own. The sound was eerie, almost hypnotic. We turned back, and the door we had tried to open was now ajar, revealing a dark staircase descending into the earth.

Reluctantly, we followed the steps. The air grew cold and musty. At the bottom, we found a crypt. The walls were lined with niches, each containing a small, child-sized coffin. They were all open and empty. In the center of the room stood a large bell, like one from a schoolhouse, its rope hanging ominously. As we approached, the bell began to toll, a deep, resonant sound that seemed to shake the very foundation of the building. We covered our ears, but the sound was overwhelming. When it finally stopped, we heard a child’s laughter echoing from above.

We rushed back up the stairs, only to find the chapel transformed. The pews were now filled with ghostly figures—men, women, and children in old-fashioned clothing. They were all silent, their faces turned toward us. At the altar stood a tall, gaunt figure in a black robe, holding the handbell. It rang it once, and the figures began to sing. The hymn was haunting, words we didn’t recognize but felt in our bones. We backed away slowly, but the ghostly congregation rose and began to advance.

We fled the chapel, stumbling into the night. Behind us, the singing stopped, replaced by a single, piercing scream. When we reached our vehicle, we looked back. The chapel was dark, but the handbell sat on the ground just outside the door, as if waiting for us. We didn’t dare touch it. We drove away, vowing never to return.

Later, we learned from Elias that the property had once been the site of an orphanage run by a fanatical preacher. In the 1920s, a fire had broken out, killing all the children and the preacher. The locals believed the preacher had used them in dark rituals. The bell from the orphanage was never recovered. Now, whenever I close my eyes, I hear that bell tolling, and I know it will ring again for me.
