It began on a late October evening when my partner, Marcus, decided we should take the long way home from the high desert plateau where we’d been watching the sunset. The stars were just pricking through the indigo sky as we wound down the gravel road, the truck’s headlights carving a pale tunnel through the sagebrush. My job was to watch for wildlife, as it had been since I was a kid. I scanned the roadside, but the only eyes I caught were those of a jackrabbit, frozen in the beams, and then gone.

We came to a wide, flat valley we’d never noticed before, even though we’d driven this route dozens of times. In the middle of it sat a low, crumbling dam, and below it, a parking lot paved with cracked asphalt. It wasn’t a trailhead or a scenic overlook, just a county lot that had probably been used by fishermen in the spring. But now it was empty, and the reservoir behind the dam was a black mirror under the stars.

Marcus pulled over, cutting the engine. ‘Let’s stretch our legs,’ he said, and I agreed, though something felt off. The air was cold and still, and the only sound was the whisper of wind through dry grass. We walked to the edge of the lot, where a chain-link fence separated us from the berm. Beyond it, the water lay flat, except for a single ripple that spread from the center, as if something had surfaced and gone back down.

I laughed nervously. ‘Probably a fish.’ But Marcus was staring at the far edge of the reservoir, where a faint light flickered, like a candle behind a dirty window. ‘There’s a house out there?’ I asked. We both knew there wasn’t. The map showed nothing but empty land for miles. But the light pulsed, steady and rhythmic, like a heartbeat.

Against every instinct, I found myself walking toward it. Marcus grabbed my arm. ‘What are you doing?’ His voice was tight. I stopped, realizing I’d taken several steps without deciding to. The light seemed to call, not with sound, but with a pull in my chest, like a string attached to my sternum. I shook my head. ‘I don’t know.’

We decided to leave, but the truck wouldn’t start. The battery was fine; the engine just turned over and died, as if something was smothering the fuel. The light grew brighter, and now I could see a figure standing on the dam, silhouetted against the glow. It was tall and thin, with arms too long, and it held something that looked like a lantern.

‘Don’t look at it,’ I whispered, but we couldn’t help it. The figure raised the lantern, and the beam swept across the water, illuminating nothing—there was no ground beyond the dam, just a void of darkness. The light reached us, and I felt a warmth that was wrong, like a fever. Marcus cried out and fell to his knees, clutching his head.

I dragged him back to the truck, and as soon as I touched the door handle, the engine turned over. We sped away, gravel spitting behind us. I didn’t look back, but in the rearview mirror, I saw the light wink out, and then the valley vanished, replaced by ordinary scrubland.

We never spoke of it, but Marcus started sleeping with the lights on. Seven years later, I’m writing this in a motel room because I couldn’t stay in our house anymore. Last week, I found a lantern in the attic, one we’d never owned. It was old, made of rusted tin, and inside was a candle that had never been lit. And this morning, when I looked in the mirror, I saw the figure standing behind me, its long fingers reaching for my shoulders. I turned, but nothing was there.

I don’t know what it wants, but I’ve stopped driving at night. If you see a light in an empty field, don’t approach. And whatever you do, don’t look at the lantern maker.
