In the autumn of 2014, I lived in a sparse coastal town called Morrow’s Point, where the Pacific fog often rolled in thick as wool. One night, around 9 PM, I was in my living room, reading a dog-eared horror novel, when my phone buzzed. It was my neighbor, Sam, his voice trembling with excitement. ‘Get outside, now! Look at the sky, east over the bay!’ I dropped the book and rushed to the porch.

The fog had turned a sickly amber, as if lit from within by a colossal fire. But there was no heat, no smell of smoke. The light pulsed, slow and rhythmic, like a heart beating beneath the earth. It seemed to originate from the abandoned lighthouse on the far side of the bay, a structure that had been dark for decades. I grabbed my binoculars, but the fog was too dense; all I could see was the glow shifting, expanding and contracting like a living lung.

Sam joined me, and we stood in silence, watching the eerie dance. It wasn’t like any lightning or weather phenomenon I’d ever seen. ‘Maybe it’s the aurora?’ I whispered, but we both knew that was impossible this far south. The light grew brighter, then dimmed, then flared again, each pulse sending a chill down my spine. We noticed that the rhythm wasn’t random; it spelled out a pattern, like a signal. I tried to decode it, but it was too complex, too alien.

Then, the fog began to churn, and a shape emerged from the glow. It was a small boat, drifting toward the shore, with a single lantern at its prow. No engine, no oars, no passengers. It moved against the current, as if guided by an unseen hand. As it neared, we saw a tarnished brass plaque bolted to the bow. It read: ‘For those who wait.’ The boat scraped against the sand, and the lantern flickered out, plunging us into darkness.

The light in the sky vanished, and the fog returned to its normal gray. We stood there, breathless, as the boat sat motionless. I stepped closer, and the lantern burst to life again, brighter than before, revealing a reflection in the water. But the reflection wasn’t mine or Sam’s. It was the silhouette of a tall, thin figure, standing on the shore behind us. When we turned, no one was there.

Every night since, the light appears in the fog, and the boat comes to our beach. I’ve tried to ignore it, but tonight, I saw something new: a message scrawled in the condensation on the boat’s hull. It said, ‘You saw the signal. Now answer it.’ I don’t know what it wants, but as I write this, the lantern sways in the distance, and I fear it won’t leave until I do.
