My partner Marcus and I had just moved into the old farmhouse on the edge of Birch Hollow, a place that felt like it was perpetually waiting for something to happen. The kitchen was our favorite room, with its wide oak beams and a window that looked out over a field of withered corn. On the counter sat a plastic juice pitcher, the kind with a detachable lid, left over from the previous tenants. It was empty, lid on, a mundane object that would soon become the center of our unease.

One evening, as we were watching TV in the living room, a thunderous crash echoed from the kitchen. Marcus jumped, dropping his remote. We exchanged glances, then walked in to find the pitcher lid lying on the floor, a good six feet from the counter. The pitcher itself remained upright, as if nothing had happened. We shrugged it off, blaming a draft or a faulty seal. But the unease lingered.

A week later, it happened again. This time, the lid flew across the room and landed with a clatter inside the greasy electric frying pan we’d left to cool on the stove. Marcus, who has always been sensitive to the supernatural, went pale. He whispered, ‘It’s here.’ We tried to rationalize it, but deep down, we knew this was no accident.

The incidents became more frequent. The lid would rattle, the pitcher would vibrate, and sometimes we’d hear a faint giggle from the direction of the kitchen. Marcus began seeing things: a shadowy figure lurking by the pantry, a pair of eyes in the dark hallway. I started hearing my name called in a soft, female voice when I was alone. It was always from the kitchen.

One night, I decided to investigate. I sat at the kitchen table, watching the pitcher. Hours passed in silence. Just as I was about to give up, the lid popped off and spun like a top, then halted, pointing directly at the cellar door. I called Marcus, and we opened the door, revealing a narrow staircase descending into darkness.

We found an old diary in the cellar, tucked behind a loose brick. It belonged to a woman named Eleanor, who had lived here in the 1920s. She wrote about her husband’s cruelty, her failed attempts to leave, and how she’d finally poisoned his wine one night. But instead of feeling liberated, she was consumed by guilt. The last entry read: ‘I hear them in the walls, in the pitcher, in my head. They will not let me rest.’

Now we understand. The pitcher had been hers, a gift from her mother. She used it to serve the poisoned drink. Her spirit is trapped, reliving that moment, and the lid flying is her desperate attempt to reach out, to confess, to be heard. We’ve tried to help her, but she only grows more agitated. The lid now flies at our heads, and the whispers have become threats. We’re planning to move, but I fear she’ll follow us. After all, the diary said she’ll never let anyone forget.
