In the sweltering summer of 1995, my buddy Carl from Tampa came up to visit me in Chicago, but he spent most of his time crashing at our mutual friend’s place in the suburbs. A week into his trip, he asked if I’d drive him to Detroit to see his grandma. It was a four-hour haul, but I had nothing better to do, so I said yes.

We rolled into the outskirts of Detroit on a Friday night, pulling up to a small bungalow on Maple Street. The neighborhood was eerily quiet, with overgrown lawns and houses that seemed to lean away from the street. His grandma, a frail woman with skin like parchment, greeted us with a toothless smile. She insisted I stay in the spare room, which smelled of mothballs and old wood. Carl and I chatted for a bit, then turned in around midnight.

The spare room was cramped, with a single twin bed shoved against the wall. I lay down, exhausted from the drive, and fell asleep almost instantly. But at 3 a.m., I woke with a start, not from noise, but from a strange sensation in my arms. They were moving on their own, sliding up and down the mattress as if they had a mind of their own. I was too tired to panic, so I cracked open my right eye, just a slit, and saw my arms bending and flexing like rubber, without my command. They felt like jelly, weightless and unnatural. I was more curious than frightened. I watched for a minute, then my lids grew heavy, and I slipped back into sleep.

The next morning, I told Carl about the strange incident. He raised an eyebrow, intrigued, but said it was probably just sleep paralysis or something. He said his grandma had a lot of weird stuff in that house, but he never experienced anything himself. He had to pack, so I hung around, drinking weak coffee in the kitchen while his grandma moved about, humming an off-key tune.

As I stood by the window, I noticed a peculiar thing: a small, dead bird on the windowsill, its beak open as if frozen mid-scream. I tried to ignore it, but then I saw another, and another, lined up along the ledge, all dead, all the same. I mentioned it to his grandma, but she just shrugged and said, ‘They come to sleep.’ Her words sent a chill up my spine.

Carl came in with his bag, and we said our goodbyes. On the drive home, I couldn’t shake the image of those birds. I told Carl about them, and he got quiet. He admitted that his grandma had been acting strange lately, muttering about ‘the sleepers’ and ‘the waking’. He thought it was just old age, but now he wasn’t so sure.

Back in Chicago, life returned to normal. But a week later, I woke up at 3 a.m. again, and my arms were moving on their own, like before, but this time they were lifting off the bed, hovering in the air as if pulled by invisible strings. I was fully awake, and fear gripped me. I tried to stop them, but my arms were like noodles, flopping and twisting. I screamed, but no sound came out. The sensation lasted for minutes before I felt a sudden release, and my arms fell back to the mattress, heavy and lifeless.

I called Carl the next day, but he didn’t answer. His roommate picked up and said Carl had gone back to Florida early, something about a family emergency. I felt a growing dread. I drove back to Maple Street that weekend, but the bungalow was empty, the windows dark, and the lawn more overgrown than before. A neighbor told me that Carl’s grandma had passed away the previous week, and that the house had been abandoned ever since. When I asked about the birds, the neighbor just shook his head and said, ‘They come to sleep,’ exactly as she had.

I never saw Carl again. But sometimes, at 3 a.m., I feel my arms start to move, and I know that whatever is in that house, it followed me home.
