It was the tail end of June, two summers ago, and I was stuck in summer school because I’d bombed algebra. The heat in Nevada that day was unbearable, a dry furnace blast that made the air shimmer over the blacktop. My buddy Marcus and I ducked into our classroom early, desperate for the air conditioning that rattled in the window unit. The room was empty, the desks arranged in neat rows, the whiteboard still smudged with yesterday’s equations. We booted up the old desktops in the corner, plugged in our earbuds, and started scrolling through music videos, the only sound the hum of the machines and the click of keys.

Then I saw it. A flicker in my peripheral vision, something dark and insubstantial gliding along the far wall. I turned slowly, and it was a black shape, like a cutout of a person, drifting silently across the room. It passed through the chalkboard and vanished into the plaster. My heart hammered. Marcus ripped out his earbuds, his face pale. ‘You saw that too?’ he whispered. I nodded, unable to speak. We stared at the wall, but nothing else moved.

We tried to laugh it off, blaming the heat, the glare from the window. But then the piano started. Upstairs, someone was playing a melody, slow and mournful, echoing through the vents. The notes were precise, almost haunting, like something from a forgotten music box. Marcus looked at me, a mix of fear and curiosity in his eyes. ‘I gotta see who’s playing that,’ he said, his voice steadier than I felt. I told him to be careful, and he left, the door sighing shut behind him.

The minutes crawled. The piano continued, weaving a tangled tune that seemed to wrap around my thoughts. Then it stopped. I heard footsteps above—not the soft thud of sneakers, but the sharp click of heels on a linoleum floor. They moved across the ceiling, paused, then headed toward the stairs. The sound grew closer, descending, until it stopped directly above our room.

I held my breath, waiting. The door burst open, and Marcus stumbled in, his face ashen, sweat beading on his forehead. He grabbed my arm, his grip tight. ‘I went up there,’ he gasped. ‘The piano was in Room 12, the old music room. The door was cracked open. I peeked inside, and the bench was empty, but the keys were moving—like an invisible person was playing. Then they stopped. I heard her footsteps, high heels, coming from the corner of the room. They walked right past me, but there was nobody there.’ He shuddered. ‘She’s still here. I heard her go down the hall.’

We didn’t wait. We grabbed our backpacks and bolted out of the school, the heat hitting us like a wave. We never told anyone what we saw, but that summer, every time I passed a piano, I listened for the sound of footsteps tapping along the keys. I never heard them again, but sometimes, when the air conditioner hums just right, I swear I can hear that mournful tune, reminding me that some melodies are played by hands that aren’t there.
