It was a grey Saturday in late January, and I was holed up in my cramped basement apartment, the only light coming from the glow of my monitor as I dove into a strategy game. My desk was shoved against a bare concrete wall, with a cheap wardrobe to my left, its plywood doors slightly ajar. I had just died in a skirmish and was waiting for my respawn timer when a strange sound broke the silence—a soft rustling, like dry leaves skittering across the floor. I turned, thinking a mouse had gotten in, but the noise came from the wardrobe.

The doors, which were closed, now stood open, and from the darkness within stepped a girl. She couldn’t have been older than seven, with lank hair and a faded dress. She didn’t push the doors; she simply phased through them as if they were mist. For a second, we locked eyes—her gaze was empty, yet somehow piercing. My entire body went rigid, my breath seized in my chest. Then, with a motion like a wind-up toy, she pivoted and walked back into the wardrobe, vanishing into the wood grain as if it were a curtain.

I couldn’t move. My heart hammered so loud it echoed in my ears. Just then, my roommate burst through the door, his face pale. ‘Did you see her?’ he blurted, his voice cracking. ‘The little girl? I saw her in the hallway just now, and she went through our door!’ But I couldn’t speak. I just pointed at the wardrobe, and my roommate’s face went ashen. He backed away, his hands trembling. ‘That’s not possible,’ he whispered, ‘that wardrobe came from my grandmother’s house… where my aunt went missing in the ’70s.’

We spent the rest of that day in silence, avoiding each other’s eyes. The wardrobe doors remained closed, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that they were watching us. That night, I heard the rustling again, and a faint giggle from inside the room. I didn’t sleep. By morning, I decided we had to find out who that girl was. My roommate, against his better judgment, helped me drag the wardrobe out to the backyard and pry it open. We found nothing inside but old mothballs and a single child’s hair ribbon, pale pink and frayed.

That ribbon now sits in a drawer, but I still wake up at 3 AM to the sound of tiny footsteps and the wardrobe doors creaking open. My roommate moved out last week, but I can’t leave. The girl is still here, and she’s started leaving small objects in my room—a marble, a broken doll’s arm, a piece of string. Sometimes, when I look in the mirror, I catch a glimpse of her standing behind me, her eyes not in the reflection but staring directly at my back. I don’t know what she wants, but I’m afraid she’s waiting for something. Maybe me.
