The apartment on Meridian Avenue had always been a quiet haven for me. At twenty-six, I had grown accustomed to solitude, the kind that settles into your bones and makes the silence feel like a companion. That afternoon, the Florida heat clung to the walls like a second skin, and I stumbled in from work, drained. Without thinking, I collapsed onto the worn floral couch, lying flat on my back, a position I never chose. The room was dim, the curtains half-drawn, and the only sound was the faint hum of the refrigerator from the kitchen.

I must have drifted, caught between waking and dreaming, when the noise changed. The ceiling fan, which had been whirring overhead, transformed. Its steady hum became a warped, mechanical groan, as if the blades were grinding through gravel. My eyes snapped open, and my heart hammered against my ribs. In the gray haze of the afternoon, I saw them: four figures standing in a semicircle before the couch. They were not human, not in any way I could define. Their forms were pitch-black, absorbing all light, like holes torn in the fabric of reality. They had no faces, no features, just silhouettes that seemed to pulse with a malevolent stillness.

I tried to scream, but my throat closed. I tried to move, but my limbs were lead. The figures did not advance; they simply stood, watching. Then, one of them raised an arm, a thin, elongated limb, and pointed at me. A voice, not from any of them but from all around, whispered, ‘You should not have turned it on.’ The ceiling fan groaned louder, and I felt a pressure in my skull, like my thoughts were being pulled outward. The figures began to flicker, like bad television static, and with a final, agonized shriek of metal, the fan’s blades snapped off and spun across the room, embedding themselves in the wall. The lights flickered, and the figures vanished.

I lay there, drenched in sweat, the room silent except for the drip of water from the kitchen sink. I never touched that fan again. I moved out a week later, but the fear followed me. Months after, in a new city, I started hearing the same distorted hum. One night, I looked up from my bed to see a single dark figure standing in the doorway, its head tilted as if curious. It raised a hand, and the fan above me began to rotate, faster and faster, until its blades blurred into a circle of black. The hum grew louder, drowning out my screams, and I knew: it had followed me, and it would never let me turn off the fan again.
