When I was very young, my family moved into a large, old home on Maple Lane. We did not have to pay to live there because my father was hired to look after the town’s community garden.

From our first day, strange things occurred. The sound of a bouncing ball would often come from the empty backyard, even though no one was outside playing. One evening, a heavy bookcase in the living room fell over for no reason at all.

The small room where I slept was always freezing. I would cry until my parents came, and they would find me shivering with cold. Later, that room was used for guests. My uncle said his mattress trembled during the night. My grandmother woke up with a sore spot on her arm, and my other relative shouted that she saw a pale figure standing near the window. My mother often said she felt a strange presence in the house.
