Elara hadn’t seen her Uncle Silas in months. The man, once a pillar of booming laughter and impossibly strong hands, had been reduced to a skeletal figure trapped within his own decaying manor. For years, he’d lived alone, a hermit clinging to the vestiges of his former life, his health a brittle thing. That particular night, the air in the cavernous house was thick with an unspoken dread. Elara had been sent to retrieve a worn, moth-eaten quilt from the master bedroom closet, a space Uncle Silas hadn’t opened in years. As she fumbled with the heavy oak door, a peculiar stillness settled over the room, a palpable absence that prickled her skin.

“Silas, why are you ignoring them?” a voice rasped, dry as autumn leaves. Elara froze. It was Uncle Silas, his eyes, once bright, now clouded and unfocused, staring past her. “You must offer them refreshment. They’ve traveled so far.”

Elara’s blood ran cold. The ‘them’ he spoke of were faces from faded photographs, relatives long departed, people she’d only known through hushed family lore. A wave of unease washed over her. “Uncle Silas, there’s no one here but us,” she whispered, her voice trembling.

He offered a weak, unsettling smile. “They’ve come to take me, child. It’s time. The hour approaches.” He gestured vaguely towards the window, where the moon hung like a sliver of bone in the inky sky. Elara, though terrified, dismissed it as the ravings of a dying man, a mind adrift in the sea of illness.

She retreated, leaving him to his spectral guests, the quilt clutched in her numb fingers. Sleep offered no escape that night. She found herself adrift in a suffocating darkness, her limbs leaden, her breath stolen. A profound pressure bore down on her chest, an invisible weight pressing her into the mattress. She could see her own room, bathed in the pale moonlight, yet she was utterly trapped, a prisoner in her own body. Beside her, in the dimly lit living room, her younger brother, Leo, stirred in his sleep on the worn sofa.

Then, a faint scratching began. It seemed to emanate from the walls, a delicate, insistent sound like tiny claws against aged plaster. It grew, a symphony of skittering that seemed to surround the house. Elara tried to scream, to call out to Leo, but no sound escaped her lips. The scratching intensified, moving from the walls to the floorboards, then to the very door of her room. It was a sound of countless, tiny feet, of something eager and ancient, pressing inward. The doorknob began to turn, slowly, agonizingly. The sliver of moonlight through the gap illuminated not the familiar hallway, but a chasm of unblinking eyes and impossibly elongated limbs, their forms barely held together by the suffocating dark. The scratching stopped, replaced by a low, collective hum that vibrated through the very air, a sound that promised a terrible, eternal welcome. The door creaked open.
