The day had that peculiar stillness that precedes a storm, though the sky remained an unbroken sheet of white. Mrs. Meera Sharma, a mathematics teacher at St. Xavier’s Higher Secondary School in the dusty town of Ankleshwar, felt a weight in the air as she climbed the final flight of stairs to the third floor. She’d had the same uneasy feeling all morning, a prickling at the back of her neck that she couldn’t shake.

It was during the lunch break that the incident occurred. Meera was walking down the corridor, her footsteps echoing in the empty hallway, when she saw a girl at the top of the stairwell. The girl, whose name she later learned was Isha, was leaning against the railing, staring at something below. Without warning, Isha stepped forward and plummeted down the stairs, her body twisting mid-air as if she were a ragdoll caught in a gust of wind. There was no one near her; the landing was eerily clear. Meera’s scream froze in her throat as she rushed to the bottom, finding Isha crumpled in a broken heap.

The school erupted into chaos. Students and teachers gathered, and Meera took charge. She knelt beside Isha, who was conscious but mute, her eyes wide with a terror that seemed to look through everything. Meera and the staff tried everything to revive her—smelling salts, water, even a soft slap—but all Isha managed was a guttural whisper that Meera thought she imagined: ‘She pushed me.’

But there was no she. The stairwell was empty, and no one had seen anyone else.

Over the following weeks, Isha’s behavior became increasingly strange. She stopped talking entirely, her eyes vacant, and she began to avoid the stairwell, taking absurdly long detours through the science wing. Her grades, once brilliant, began to slip. Meera, who knew the girl was one of the top students, felt a pang of responsibility and decided to investigate. She spent her evenings in the library, combing through old records, and discovered a forgotten history of the school’s grounds. The building had been erected on the site of an old orphanage that had burned down in the 1950s. Among the victims was a young girl named Leela, who had a reputation for being a troublemaker, and who had been blamed for starting the fire. The official record said she died trying to escape, but some whispered she had been pushed down the very stairwell that now existed in the same spot.

Meera’s research unearthed a chilling detail: Leela had a habit of descending the stairs in a peculiar way, as if someone were leading her, and witnesses had reported seeing a shadowy figure—a girl—at the top of the stairs before Leela fell. That night, Meera couldn’t sleep. She kept seeing Isha’s face and hearing her whisper.

A month later, on another new moon night, Meera stayed late to finish grading papers. The school was empty, and the silence pressed against her eardrums. She walked toward the stairwell, intending to go down, but as she reached the top, she saw a girl at the bottom, looking up. It was Isha, but her face was pale and expressionless, her body motionless. Meera called out, but Isha didn’t respond. Instead, she began to ascend the stairs, one step at a time, her movements eerily fluid, as if she were being pulled upward by invisible strings. Meera froze, her heart hammering.

Isha stopped just one step below Meera and looked up, her eyes glinting with an otherworldly light. She reached out a hand, and in that moment, Meera felt a cold draft and heard the faint sound of a child’s voice singing a nursery rhyme—the same rhyme Leela was said to have hummed to herself. Isha tilted her head and spoke in a voice that was not her own: ‘She wants me to join her.’

Meera stumbled backward, but Isha lunged forward, pushing her into the stairwell. Meera felt herself falling, the world spinning, and then darkness swallowed her.

She woke hours later at the bottom of the stairs, bruised but alive. A note, written in shaky handwriting, was clutched in her hand. It read: ‘You will take her place.’

Since that night, Meera has never been the same. She transferred to a different school, but the memory of Isha’s hollow eyes and the voice from the stairs haunts her. Sometimes, in the quiet moments, she hears the nursery rhyme and feels a cold hand on her shoulder, waiting. She knows that on the next new moon, the girl will come again, and this time, there will be no escape.
