In the autumn of 2021, I was living in a rented cottage on the edge of a pine forest, far from any neighbors. The previous tenant had left a large, wooden crate in the basement, sealed with rusted nails. I never thought much of it until one night, around 3 AM, I woke to a rhythmic scratching from below, like something trying to claw its way out.

My dog, a husky mix named Blue, was usually fearless, but that night he refused to go near the basement door, whimpering and hiding under the kitchen table. I grabbed a flashlight and an old crowbar, but when I reached the basement steps, the scratching stopped. A cold draft crept up from the darkness, carrying a smell like damp earth and rotting leaves.

I descended slowly, the stairs creaking under my weight. The crate sat in the corner, its wood warped and stained. As I approached, I noticed faint carvings on its surface—symbols I didn’t recognize. Then I heard a low, guttural hum, almost like a chant, coming from inside. My hands trembled as I jammed the crowbar under the lid and pried it open.

Inside, there was nothing but a layer of black, viscous soil. But as I leaned in, the soil began to shift, forming a shape—a hand, then an arm, reaching toward me. I stumbled back, dropping the flashlight. When it rolled, its beam caught a small, tarnished locket lying in the soil. I grabbed it and fled up the stairs, slamming the basement door behind me.

That night, I opened the locket. Inside was a faded photograph of a young woman with hollow eyes, and a lock of hair tied with a red thread. The hum from the basement grew louder, and I felt a cold breath on my neck. A voice, barely a whisper, said, ‘You let me out.’

I ran to the front door, but the forest outside was dark and silent, and I could see something moving between the trees—a shape that was not quite human. The voice spoke again, now from inside my own head, ‘I am free. You will be my vessel.’

As the days passed, I began to forget things—my own name, the faces of my friends, the feel of sunlight. The locket never left my pocket, and at night I would lie awake, feeling the soil from the crate crawling up my legs, into my veins, replacing my blood with black earth.

Now, I sit by the window, watching the forest, waiting. The woman in the photograph has my eyes. And I know that when the last leaf falls, I will carry her to the next unwitting soul, just as I was carried here. The crate is empty, but its hunger is not.

If you ever find a sealed crate in a basement, do not open it. And if you hear a hum, do not listen. Because some things are meant to stay buried, and I am proof of what happens when they are not.
