The ancient forest floor, usually a tapestry of decaying leaves and soft moss, felt unnaturally hard and brittle beneath Elias’s worn boots. His pickup sputtered and died with a final, wheezing gasp, plunging him into an oppressive, moonless dark. The silence that followed wasn’t just the absence of engine noise; it was a heavy, suffocating blanket that pressed in on him, stealing the very air from his lungs. He fumbled for his phone, the screen a pathetic, flickering beacon against the encroaching blackness. No signal. Of course.

Disoriented, he stepped out of the truck, the sudden stillness amplifying the frantic thudding of his own heart. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and something else, something cloying and vaguely metallic, like old blood. He strained his ears, catching a faint, rhythmic crunching sound in the distance, like dry twigs snapping underfoot. He spun around, his breath catching in his throat, but the trees stood sentinel, their gnarled branches like skeletal fingers reaching into the void. No one. There was never anyone.

Then, his flashlight beam, which he’d sworn he’d left in the glove compartment, flickered to life on the muddy track ahead. He stumbled towards it, a strange, almost magnetic pull drawing him forward. The beam, impossibly steady, cut through the darkness, illuminating a colossal oak, its bark scarred and ancient. Carved into its trunk, stark against the rough wood, were letters: ‘EDEN IS A LIE.’ A cold dread, unlike anything he had ever known, washed over him. His mind reeled, a dizzying descent into primal fear. The world seemed to tilt, the forest floor dissolving beneath him.

Consciousness returned with the jarring roar of the truck’s engine. The interior lights cast a sickly yellow glow, and Elias’s own sweat-slicked face stared back at him from the rearview mirror, a mask of pure terror. His watch read 3:17 AM. He had lost nearly four hours. The metallic tang in the air was stronger now, seeping into the cab. He didn’t hesitate. Slamming the truck into gear, he tore away from the oppressive woods, the tires spitting gravel. He didn’t look back, but he could feel it, a silent, unblinking gaze following him, etched into the very fabric of the night, promising that some places, once visited, never truly let you leave.
