The desert roads of the western plains are known for strange sights after dark. Travelers speak of glowing spheres that drift across the empty land, confusing livestock and startling drivers on long journeys.

My own encounter happened on a trip from Red Creek to Silverton. I was driving through the deep night when I noticed a single, bright light following me. It stayed a fixed distance behind my vehicle for miles. I grew frustrated, thinking it was another driver refusing to pass. I tapped my brakes, hoping they would go around.

Suddenly, the light was no longer behind me. It split into two soft spheres that floated beside my windows. I pulled over and got out. The orbs danced silently around my car, casting no shadows. The air was completely still.

I fumbled in my bag, trying to find my phone. One of the lights drifted near my face. It was a cool, gentle radiance that did not hurt my eyes. As the first hint of sun touched the horizon, the light simply faded away, like a candle being snuffed out.

I have not driven that road at night since.
