The clock on the bedside table glowed 3:07 AM when I woke with a start, my heart hammering against my ribs. The room was pitch black except for the faint green numerals. I lay still, listening for the sound that had roused me, but there was only the hum of the refrigerator from the kitchen below. Then, without warning, a glow bloomed in the corner of the room, above my dresser. It was not the pale light of a streetlamp; it was a warm, golden luminescence, like a stage spotlight, casting a pool of brilliance against the dark.

I turned my head slowly, and there he was. A man, floating in the air, his back to me. He seemed to be made of impossible colors, so vivid they hurt my eyes. He wore a wide-brimmed hat made of a slick, wet-looking material, the same substance draped over his shoulders like a cape, clinging to his neck. The light seemed to emanate from him, yet it also fell on him from an unseen source, highlighting every texture. I could see the individual fibers of the hat, the faint sheen of moisture on the fabric, and the tiny hairs on the back of his neck.

I froze, my breath caught in my throat. My first thought was that I was dreaming, but I had never been so awake. I could feel the cool sheet beneath my fingers, the faint scratch of the blanket. I tried to convince myself it was a trick of the light, a shadow from the window, but the image was too solid, too real. Then he began to turn.

It was slow, deliberate. His head swiveled on his neck, and I saw the profile of a dark-skinned face, creased with age, his jaw set. He was perhaps fifty, with a strong nose and high cheekbones. As he continued to rotate, his eyes fixed on me. They were deep brown, almost black, and they held a profound, ancient sadness. He said nothing, but his gaze was heavy, pressing on me like a physical weight.

I snapped my eyes away, staring at the far wall, hoping he would vanish if I ignored him. But the glow persisted at the edge of my vision. I could feel his stare boring into me. I closed my eyes tightly, counted to ten, and opened them. He was still there, now fully facing me, his expression unchanged. It was as if he were waiting for something, what I did not know.

Terror coiled in my stomach. I wanted to scream, but my throat was locked. I tried to move, but my limbs were leaden. The light began to intensify, and I noticed the edges of the room starting to shimmer, as if reality itself was wavering. The man’s lips parted slightly, and a sound emerged—a low, guttural hum that vibrated in my bones. It was not a word, but a tone that seemed to resonate with the very core of my being.

Then, as suddenly as it had begun, the light flickered, and the man’s form wavered like a heat mirage. His eyes rolled back, and he began to fade, the colors bleeding out until he was nothing but a ghostly outline. The humming stopped, and the room plunged back into darkness. I lay there, gasping, my body drenched in sweat.

When dawn finally broke, I convinced myself it had been a waking nightmare, a product of stress and late-night reading. But as the days passed, I began to notice changes. A faint, sweet smell clung to my belongings, like rotting flowers. My reflection in mirrors seemed to lag behind my movements by a fraction of a second. And every night, at 3:07 AM, I would wake to the hum, and the glow would flicker at the edge of my vision, growing stronger each time.

I tried everything to escape: I moved to a new apartment, changed my phone number, even stayed with friends. But the visitor followed me, unseen but felt. His sad eyes haunted me, and I began to understand that his journey was not complete. He was searching for something, and I was the gate.

One night, as the hum reached a fever pitch and the light filled my room, I finally gave in. I opened my eyes and met his gaze, and in that moment, I felt a surge of empathy. I whispered, ‘What do you want?’

His form flickered, and for the first time, his lips moved. A voice, like the rustle of dry leaves, spoke in my mind: ‘I was once like you, but I saw what should not be seen. Now I am bound to this glow, a messenger of the threshold. You were chosen because you are open. Do not close your eyes. Listen, and you will hear the final word.’

The next morning, I found a small, glistening green feather on my pillow. It was the only physical trace he ever left. I kept it, and every night, I watch the corner of my room, waiting for the visitor to return, to deliver his message, and to set us both free.
