The salt spray stung Elias’s cheeks as he trudged along the tide line, the late afternoon sun a bruised orange on the horizon. He was supposed to be meeting his cousins, Marco and Sofia, by the old lighthouse keeper’s cottage, a derelict structure that had been empty for as long as anyone could remember. They always walked home together from the village school, a habit ingrained since they were small, their combined presence a bulwark against the encroaching gloom that clung to the craggy cliffs.

Today, however, felt different. A strange stillness had fallen over the normally boisterous path. Elias walked between Marco and Sofia, their usual banter absent. He glanced down, his gaze snagging on Sofia’s silhouette against the darkening sand. Something was dreadfully wrong. He traced the outline of Marco’s shadow, then his own, stark and defined. But Sofia’s… it was a truncated horror. Where her head should have been, there was only an empty, unnerving space.

Elias’s breath hitched. He nudged Sofia, trying to keep his voice even. “Sof, your… your shadow.”

Sofia, lost in thought, barely registered his words. Marco, however, stopped dead. He stared, his face paling. “What in the…”

Sofia finally looked down, her eyes widening in disbelief. The headless shadow stretched before her, a silent testament to a monstrous inversion of reality. It moved with her, yet it was utterly alien, a macabre puppet whose strings were pulled by an unseen, malevolent force. A chill that had nothing to do with the sea breeze snaked through Elias. He remembered the old tales his mother used to tell, hushed stories of things that walked the shores, things that stole pieces of people, not their lives, but something more fundamental.

As they stood frozen, a faint, dry rustling sound came from behind them, like dead leaves skittering across stone. They didn’t dare turn around. Sofia let out a small, choked whimper, her eyes fixed on the phantom devoid of a crown. The headless shadow began to distort, elongating, reaching out as if to embrace the girl who walked beside it, a girl who, with each passing moment, seemed to be forgetting the shape of her own head.

Marco grabbed Sofia’s arm, his grip like iron. “Run,” he croaked, his voice raw. They turned and fled, not daring to look back, the sound of the dry rustling growing closer, faster. Elias risked a glance over his shoulder and saw it – a wispy, indistinct shape detaching itself from the deepening twilight, gliding effortlessly over the sand towards the headless shadow, which now seemed to pulse with a faint, unholy luminescence. He didn’t know what it was, but he knew it was coming for what was missing, for what had been severed from Sofia’s very being.
