The Girl Who Saw Beyond

My father has a colleague, and I believe his colleague’s child perceives things others cannot. She is an eight-year-old girl who does not speak. She communicates with her hands, a language she prefers.

We were visiting my father’s home one afternoon. The adults were conversing in the living room while the girl played quietly with her toys. After a while, she stood up and walked to the hallway, facing a blank wall.

She began moving her hands with purpose. Her father, who understands her signs, grew quiet. He told us she was signing “look at me” over and over. She seemed to be addressing several empty spaces, growing visibly upset when they did not respond.

When we gently asked who was there, she simply turned and pointed at the empty hallway before resuming her silent, urgent conversation.
