The Girl in the Night

One quiet evening, as the stars twinkled outside, Sam lay in bed, listening to the soft sounds of the house. Everyone else was asleep, and the calmness wrapped around him like a warm blanket. Suddenly, he heard heavy footsteps echoing down the hallway, a sound that broke the stillness of the night.

Thinking it might be his little brother Jake, who often had trouble sleeping, Sam got out of bed. He crept into the hallway, his heart racing with curiosity. As he turned the corner, he spotted Jake standing at the far end, his silhouette dimly lit by the moonlight filtering through the window. Jake was wearing his pajamas, which seemed to hang loosely on his small frame.

Sam rushed toward him, ready to guide him back. “Jake! What are you doing up?” he asked, placing a hand on his brother’s shoulder. But as he touched him, an icy chill raced through him.

When Sam turned Jake around to face him, he was met with a pair of striking green eyes that glowed unnaturally in the dark. The expression on Jake’s face was twisted with a strange malice, unlike anything Sam had ever seen. In a blink, the figure slipped away from his grasp, sprinting down the hallway and vanishing through the wall at the end.

Sam stood frozen, his mind racing with fear and disbelief. He rushed back to his room, his heart pounding in his chest. Odd encounters weren’t new to him; he had been aware of the unseen since he was five. But this was different. The chilling eyes and sinister grin lingered in his thoughts, leaving him unsettled as he lay back down, the night stretching on in anxious silence.
