My name is Lila, and I was eight when this occurred. My family had moved from Brazil to a small town in Texas two years earlier. My older siblings, Marco and Sofia, were out with my mother one afternoon, leaving me at home with my younger brother, Leo, and my middle brother, Ben.

Leo and I were building a fort in the living room when I felt a sharp tug on my sleeve. I thought it was Leo, so I told him to stop. Ben scolded me for being mean, but I insisted I hadn’t done anything. He didn’t believe me, so I let it go.

The following morning, I was in the den looking for a book to read. A boy appeared in the hallway. He looked about my age, with short black hair and was wearing a crisp blue shirt and shorts. We simply stared at one another for a long moment. Then, he turned and vanished down the hall.

We had guests visiting that day, so after they departed, I asked my mother if the boy belonged to them. She looked at me, confused, and said they didn’t have a son.
