I used to live in a fourth-floor walk-up in a creaking old building in Boston, above a boarded-up bakery. My one-bedroom apartment was a strange layout: the bedroom faced the street, and the kitchen and living room looked out over a narrow alley. Between them, a long, twisting stairwell that went up to the roof and down to the ground floor. I was the only tenant on that floor, and the floors below were vacant and stripped of their doors. No children lived in the building, or even in the entire block. It was a dead zone, silent except for the hum of distant traffic.

One night, around three in the morning, I was jolted from a deep sleep. Not by a sound, but by a sudden sense of wrongness, like a cold hand pressing on my chest. I lay there, heart pounding, listening. Nothing. The streetlight cast a pale glow through the blinds. Then, after a long silence, I heard it: footsteps on the stairwell. Not the deliberate tread of a neighbor, but a rapid, light patter, like bare feet on wood. They were racing up, getting closer, and then just as they reached my landing, they stopped. I held my breath, waiting. A few seconds later, a sound echoed up from the stairwell: a high, wavering giggle, like a child’s laugh but off-key, stretched out, and strangely hollow. It echoed and twisted, as if it was bouncing off walls that weren’t there.

I had to see what it was. I crept out of bed, my bare feet silent on the cold floor, and made my way to the door. My hand hovered over the knob, and I tried to steady my breathing. Then I yanked the door open, expecting to confront something. The hallway was empty. The stairwell was a dark pit, lit only by a weak bulb that flickered at the bottom. No giggle, no footsteps. Just the smell of old dust and something sour. I stepped out onto the landing and peered down the twisting steps, but saw nothing. The silence was heavy, like a blanket.

I closed the door, locking it, and went back to bed, convincing myself it was just a stray cat or the building settling. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was in the walls, or in the stairwell, waiting. For the rest of that night, I lay awake, staring at the ceiling, listening for any sound. But there was nothing. I never heard it again. I moved out a month later, but sometimes, in the quiet of my new place, I think I can hear that giggle, faint and far away, as if it’s still following me up the stairs.
