In the sweltering summer of 2019, my family booked a week at the Cragmoor Manor Resort in the hills of western Massachusetts. The manor, a sprawling Victorian relic, was reputed to harbor a restless spirit named Margaret on its lower floors, while a darker presence lurked in the attic, once the site of a tragic fire. The resort capitalized on this, offering nightly ghost tours. Being skeptics, we signed up for the Thursday tour, more for entertainment than belief.

The tour guide, a gaunt woman named Cora, led us through the dim, creaking halls. She recounted how a previous guide had been in the attic office when a harsh, guttural voice bellowed ‘Leave this place!’ from an empty corner. As we climbed the narrow stairs to the third floor, my flashlight flickered and died, then snapped back on, its beam pointing directly at a soot-stained patch on the wall. Cora smiled nervously, claiming it was Margaret’s mischief.

Later that night, I decided to conduct my own EVP session in the manor’s library, a room lined with rotting books and a cold hearth. I set up a digital recorder and asked simple questions into the silence. For minutes, nothing. Then, on playback, I heard a faint whisper, not a word but a chittering, like dry leaves scraping against each other. I played it again, but the sound had changed—now it was a soft, rhythmic tapping, like fingernails on wood. My skin crawled, and I left, thinking it was pipes.

The next day, as we relaxed by the pool, an old photograph came to mind. In the manor’s lobby hung a portrait of Margaret, a stern woman in mourning. In the photo, her eyes seemed to follow me. That night, I woke to find my bedroom door ajar, though I’d locked it. A cold draft flowed from the hallway, carrying a faint odor of burnt sugar. I closed the door and tried to sleep, but I felt a presence, as if someone stood just beyond the threshold, waiting.

The following morning, my daughter Clara, who had been playing in the attic, came down with a strange rash on her arm, shaped like a handprint. She claimed she’d seen a woman in a white dress beckoning her. I dismissed it as a reaction to ivy, but that evening, as we attended the final ghost tour, Cora announced that the attic would be closed indefinitely due to structural damage. She lowered her voice, ‘Something’s been stirring up there lately. It’s not Margaret. It’s something older.’

On the last night, I tried one final EVP session, this time from the attic hallway. I asked, ‘Is there something here?’ The recorder picked up a clear, harsh whisper: ‘You know too much.’ I packed our bags at dawn, but as we drove away, I glanced back and saw a silhouette in the attic window—a woman, waving. My blood ran cold. I didn’t tell my family, but in that moment, I knew the manor’s secrets were not going to stay behind.

A month later, at home, I played the EVP recording again. Buried beneath the static, I heard a voice—my own, from the first session—answering a question I hadn’t yet asked: ‘No, I’m not leaving. This is my home now.’ I deleted the file, but the next day it was back on my phone, the file size slightly larger. I haven’t slept well since. Every night, I hear that whisper, faint but unmistakable: ‘You know too much.’
