The old lighthouse keeper, Silas, had never been superstitious, not until he rescued the drowned sailor’s sea cat. He named the creature Barnacle. Barnacle, a creature of sleek black fur and eyes like polished obsidian, seemed to carry a silent weight. It would often fix its gaze upon the desolate stretch of rocky shore beyond the lighthouse keeper’s cottage, its tail twitching with an unseen agitation. Silas’s neighbor, a pragmatic fisherman named Jed, dismissed it as the cat watching gulls or the tide. But Silas saw no birds, no unusual wave patterns, only the vast, indifferent grey of the Atlantic.

Barnacle also had a peculiar gait, a slow, deliberate patrol along the salt-crusted floorboards of the cottage, as if tracing an invisible outline. When Silas, out of a morbid curiosity he couldn’t quite explain, followed the cat’s path, the air would grow unnaturally frigid, raising gooseflesh on his arms despite the roaring hearth.

Silas began to experience disturbances himself. One blustery afternoon, while mending nets, he glanced towards the fogged-up pane of his window and saw, for a fleeting instant, the spectral image of a young girl in a tattered, old-fashioned dress, her face pale and sorrowful, before she vanished like sea mist.

At night, the cottage became a symphony of unnerving sounds. The old wood would groan and creak, not with the usual settling of timbers, but with a rhythmic patter, like bare feet running down the narrow hallway. And then there were the figures. Silas would catch glimpses of them, tall, gaunt silhouettes that seemed to absorb the very light from the room, always at the periphery of his vision, dissolving the moment he turned to confront them. They were more than just tricks of the light; they were persistent, silent observers, mirroring Barnacle’s own unnerving watch.
