In the autumn of 2019, I found myself in the rust-belt town of Northgate, Ohio, staying with my older brother, Dale, and his teenage son, Corey. I had always been drawn to the macabre, reading true crime and ghost stories with a mix of thrill and dread. When Dale offered me a room in his creaky Victorian on Maple Street, I jumped at the chance to escape my dead-end job in the city. The house was a relic of a more prosperous era, with tall ceilings, drafty windows, and a peculiar hum in the walls that I attributed to old plumbing.

My brother was a kind but gruff man, recently divorced, and Corey was a quiet, bookish kid who seemed to live in his own world. A few weeks into my stay, Dale’s other son, Ethan, returned from a stint in a juvenile detention center for a petty theft charge. The house, already tense with unspoken grief from Dale’s failed marriage, grew heavier with Ethan’s presence. He was sullen, with a thin scar across his eyebrow and a habit of staring at walls as if hearing something we couldn’t.

On Ethan’s first night home, Dale wanted to do something ordinary, so he took Ethan to the local bowling alley and bar, hoping to bond over cheap beer and greasy food. They returned around midnight, laughing loudly, their voices bouncing off the high ceilings and waking me from a shallow sleep. I lay still in my narrow bed, listening to them stumble through the foyer, their footfalls uneven on the hardwood. Corey’s room was across the hall, and I heard his door creak open, but he said nothing.

As I tried to drift back to sleep, I heard Dale suggest a ‘family prayer’ in the living room, a tradition they had abandoned for years. Ethan grumbled but agreed. Then, the low murmur of their voices began, reciting a prayer I remembered from my childhood. Suddenly, a sound cut through their words—a deep, guttural growl, like the growl of a massive dog, but distorted, as if filtered through water. It seemed to emanate from beneath the floorboards, directly below the living room. The growl was loud enough to vibrate the floor under my bed, and a cold draft swept across my room, extinguishing the faint glow of my nightlight.

I froze, my heart hammering. The praying stopped abruptly. I heard Ethan’s voice, sharp and fearful, ‘Did you hear that?’ Dale’s reply was shaky, ‘It’s just the old pipes, son, they always groan at night.’ But I knew better. I had heard those pipes; they didn’t growl.

The growl came again, louder, followed by a heavy thud against the floor, as if something large had slammed against the underside. I heard Corey’s door slam shut, and then a terrified cry from Corey. I threw off my covers and rushed into the hallway. The living room was a dark pit at the end of the hall, and I saw Dale and Ethan frozen, their faces pale in the dim light from the streetlamp outside. The floorboards writhed, rising and falling like waves, and from the gaps between them, a black, oily substance seeped, forming a thin, inky pool on the aged oak.

The growl became a snarling, guttural speech, words I couldn’t understand but felt deep in my bones. I grabbed Corey, who had emerged from his room, and pulled him back toward the front door. Dale and Ethan followed, stumbling over the shifting floor. As we reached the porch, the door slammed behind us, and we stood outside in the cold night air, shivering. The house was silent now, but from inside, we heard a faint, rhythmic thumping, like a heartbeat from deep within the walls.

We never went back inside. We called the police, but they found nothing. The house stands empty to this day, but I hear the floorboards remember. They remember what was done in that house long before we came, and they still hunger for the voices of prayer to wake them again.
