In the fall of 2014, my wife Elena and I rented an old Victorian house on Elm Street in the small town of Ashford. The house had a certain gloom about it, even at noon when the sun was high. The interior was dominated by creaking wooden floors that seemed to absorb light, and the air inside was always a bit stale, no matter how often we opened the windows.

I first noticed something odd while watching television alone in the living room one evening. From the hallway behind me came a series of soft, deliberate footsteps, as if someone was walking on tiptoes. I turned, but there was nothing. When I faced the screen again, the footsteps resumed, stopping abruptly when I snapped my head around. This happened nightly, and I began to feel a lurking presence, especially when I climbed the stairs. Halfway up, a chill would wash over me, and I’d feel watched, but the sensation vanished the moment I reached the top.

My thirteen-year-old daughter, Maya, was the first to speak of it. ‘Dad, there’s a presence in this house. I can feel it in my room at night.’ Elena dismissed it as our imaginations, blaming the old house’s settling. But I knew better. One afternoon, frustrated after another sleepless week, I heard the footsteps pad across the living room floor. I followed them to the edge of the room, where the wooden planks met the wall. ‘Show yourself,’ I demanded, my voice echoing in the silence. I felt a cold breath on my neck, and then the footsteps retreated, moving deliberately to the far corner, near the old fireplace.

That corner became the focal point of my obsession. I tore up the loose floorboard there, expecting to find nothing, but instead, I discovered a small, rusted key. It didn’t fit any door in the house. It was only later, while cleaning the attic, that I found a locked chest hidden behind a pile of moth-eaten blankets. The key turned with a groan, and inside, wrapped in yellowed cloth, lay a tarnished silver hand mirror. Engraved on the back was the name ‘Beatrice.’

I brought the mirror downstairs, and that night, as I held it, the glass clouded over. A face appeared—a woman with hollow eyes, her mouth open as if to scream. I dropped it, and it shattered on the hardwood floor. Elena and Maya rushed in, alarmed by the noise. But in the shards, I saw the reflection of the Victorian house, not as it was, but as it might have been—with gas lamps and peeling wallpaper, and a figure at the top of the stairs, watching.

Now, the footsteps have become a constant companion. I hear them in my study, in the kitchen, in the corridor outside our bedroom. Elena no longer doubts. And last night, as I looked into a new mirror I bought to replace the broken one, I saw not my reflection, but the woman standing behind me, her hand reaching out to touch my shoulder. I turned, but there was no one. When I looked back at the mirror, she was gone. But on the glass, scratched as if by a fingernail, were the words: ‘You found me.’
