I woke up before sunrise to finish painting the fence. The morning air was cool as I walked to the shed to find a clean brush. The shed door has a small window in it, looking straight into the main house.
As I glanced up, I saw a shape on the other side of the glass. It was a dark outline of a person, perfectly still and facing me. At first I thought it was a trick of the dim light. But the shape did not move or blink.
I felt a chill and decided to go back to my work. I tried to forget about it, focusing on the paint strokes. Hours later, I returned to the shed for a different tool.
The shape was still there. It stood in the very same position, as if it had never left. I closed my eyes tight and looked again. Nothing had changed.
