On the night of November 3rd, 1998, my grandmother lay in a coma at St. Jude’s Hospital, her frail body tethered to a web of tubes and wires. I was twelve, and the weight of her illness pressed on my chest like a stone. I hadn’t slept in days, and that night, as the clock struck 3:03 AM, a sound shattered the silence—a rhythmic thumping from beneath my bed, like a fist against the floorboards. I pulled the covers over my head, my heart hammering, and prayed for the noise to stop. When I finally drifted off, I dreamed I was sinking in a black, icy lake. The water filled my lungs, and just as I thought I would die, a figure descended from the sky, robes billowing like wings. As it approached, I recognized my grandmother’s gentle face, her eyes kind and sad. She lifted me from the depths and whispered, “You must be strong now. Your mother and sister will need you.” I woke with a gasp, my pillow soaked with tears. In the dim light, I saw my grandmother standing at the foot of my bed, her hospital gown glowing faintly. She smiled, reached out, and stroked my hair. “I love you,” she said, her voice like wind through leaves. “But you must stay away from the man who comes to the funeral. He will try to take something precious.” Then she faded, leaving only the lingering scent of lavender. By morning, the hospital called: she had passed at 3:03 AM. At her funeral, a stranger in a black coat lingered near the casket, his eyes fixed on my mother. I remembered my grandmother’s warning and stepped between them, and the man’s face twisted with fury before he vanished. Years later, I learned he was a debt collector, but my grandmother’s ghost still visits me when I need her, her warning etched in my soul like a knot that can never be undone.
