The old house on Maple Street had always been a bit strange, but last night was something else. I came home from a late shift at the diner, the rain having turned into a steady drizzle that pattered against the windows. The house was dark, as usual, and I made my way upstairs to the bathroom, my footsteps echoing on the creaky wooden stairs. As I reached the top, I felt a sudden, irrational urge to slam the bathroom door shut. My heart pounded as I pushed it closed with a bang, the sound echoing through the hallway. I stood there, breathing heavily, feeling like an idiot because my roommates probably heard. But at the same time, a wave of relief washed over me, as if I had just escaped something terrible. I laughed at myself, thinking it was just my imagination.

But when I tried to open the door to leave, it wouldn’t budge. I pushed harder, but it was stuck. A cold draft seeped through the gaps, and I noticed a strange smell, like wet earth and rust. I finally managed to shove it open, and as I stepped out, the ceiling above the hallway let out a series of loud creaks, like something heavy was moving. I remember as a kid asking my mom about those sounds, and she would say it was just the house settling. But this felt different, more deliberate. I rushed to my bedroom, the feeling of being watched crawling up my spine. I checked under my bed and in my closet, but found nothing. I tried to calm myself down, telling myself it was just the wind or the pipes.

Later, as I lay in bed, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was in the attic. The attic in this house is a tiny crawl space, accessible through a small trapdoor in the ceiling of the hallway closet. I had never been up there, and no one had in years, as far as I knew. The creaking continued, growing louder, and then I heard a distinct scraping sound, like something being dragged across the floor above. I pulled the covers tighter, my heart racing. Then, the scrape was followed by a soft thud, right above my room. I held my breath, listening. And then I heard it: a faint, rhythmic dripping. It wasn’t coming from the bathroom. It was coming from the ceiling.

I couldn’t stand it anymore. I grabbed my flashlight and made my way to the closet, determined to see what was up there. The trapdoor was dusty and stuck, but I managed to push it open. As I pulled myself up into the cramped space, the beam of my flashlight revealed something that made my blood run cold: a trail of dark, viscous liquid leading deeper into the darkness. The smell of rust and earth was overwhelming. I followed the trail, my heart thumping in my ears, until I reached the far corner. There, in the shadows, I saw a small, withered hand reaching out from a pile of old insulation. I stumbled back, falling through the trapdoor and hitting the floor hard.

The next morning, I called a contractor to check the attic. When he went up, he found nothing but dust and old boxes. He said the liquid was probably just a leak, maybe from an old pipe. But I knew what I saw. That night, as I tried to sleep, the dripping started again, but this time it was clearer, like a faucet left on. And then I realized: it was coming from inside the walls. And with it, a soft, rhythmic tapping, like someone knocking from the other side. I lay there, frozen, as the tapping moved down the wall, toward my bedroom door. It stopped right outside. The door knob turned slowly, even though I had locked it. And a voice, barely a whisper, said, ‘Let me in.’
