The first thing I noticed about the farmhouse on Maple Hollow Road was the way the porch light flickered, not like a faulty bulb, but like something was breathing on it. We’d moved from the city to get away from the noise, but the silence here was heavier than any traffic. My husband, Daniel, said it was just old wiring. I wanted to believe him.

Within a week, I started seeing things. Not the corners of my eyes, but solid shapes. A man with no face standing in the hallway, his outline bleeding into the wallpaper. I’d blink, and he’d be gone. Daniel thought I was stressed from unpacking. He didn’t see the way the shadows in the living room pooled in the corners like spilled ink, waiting for the light to go out.

Then came the knocking. Not on the door, but inside the walls. Three slow thuds, always at 3:33 AM. Daniel heard it too, and we’d lie in bed, holding our breath, listening. He said it sounded like someone was trapped. I said it sounded like something was trying to get out.

One night, I woke to find Daniel standing at the foot of the bed, his face pale. He whispered, ‘I saw it. A woman. She was standing in the doorway, and she had no legs. Just a red shirt floating above the floor.’ My blood froze. I had seen her too, the night before. I hadn’t told him because I thought I was going mad.

We started sleeping with the lights on. But the lights didn’t help. They would flicker, and then the shadows would stretch, growing long and thin, reaching toward us. One night, I watched the bathroom door slowly swing open on its own. Inside, the shadow of a man stood, and it seemed to be looking at me. Then, it fell into the floor, as if the floor was water.

Daniel had his own encounter. He was watching TV in the living room, and he saw his reflection in the dark window. But the reflection moved a second after he did. He turned around, and there was no one. But the reflection stayed, staring at him with empty eyes. He told me, ‘It wasn’t me. It was wearing my face.’

We tried to ignore it. We told ourselves it was just the old house settling. But then, the worst happened. I woke up in the middle of the night, and the bedroom door was open. A massive shadow stood there, blocking the light from the hallway, and it was big, like a bear standing on its hind legs. The feeling I got was pure terror. It wasn’t just watching. It was hungry. I grabbed Daniel, and we both stared until the shadow dissolved into the dark.

The TV would turn on by itself, always at the same volume, always on static. We unplugged it, but it still came on. We moved it to the closet, but the static followed. We threw it in the shed, but at night, we could still hear it buzzing through the floorboards.

One afternoon, my friend Lena came over. She didn’t believe me about the house. She walked down the hallway to the spare room, and I saw her freeze in the doorway. She turned to me, her face ashen. ‘Is this a joke?’ she asked. I didn’t know what she meant. She pointed to the closet mirror. It was reflecting a room that wasn’t ours. The furniture was different, the wallpaper was different, and in that reflection, a woman in a red flannel shirt was standing behind us, half-formed, as if she was made of smoke.

Lena left that day, and she didn’t come back. She called me later, her voice shaking, saying that ever since she visited, she’d been seeing a tall shape in her own hallway. ‘You brought it with you,’ she said. I wanted to tell her she was wrong, but I knew she wasn’t. Because I’d seen this before. I’d seen it in every house I’d lived in since I was a child. It didn’t matter where I went—it followed.

Daniel moved out last week. He said he couldn’t take it anymore. I don’t blame him. But I can’t leave. Because I’ve come to realize that this thing, this force, it’s not in the house. It’s in me. And I think it’s been there since I was born.

Last night, I woke up at 3:33 AM. The door was open, and the shadow was there, bigger than ever. But this time, it didn’t just stand. It walked into the room, and I felt its weight on the bed, pressing down on my chest until I couldn’t breathe. I wanted to scream, but no sound came out. And in the last moment before I blacked out, I saw its face. It was mine.
