It was around our third year in the old house that I noticed the change. At first, it was just small things—a misplaced book, a door left ajar that we knew we’d closed. But soon, the disturbances grew bolder, focusing on one thing: my jewelry box. I’d open it to grab a silver chain I’d worn the week before, and find all my necklaces intertwined in a gnarly, impossible web. I’d spend an hour carefully teasing them apart, my fingers working through each loop and tangle, my mind trying to comprehend how they’d gotten so twisted. I know I hadn’t worn them in days; I’d left them neatly coiled in their velvet compartments.

After weeks of this, I’d had enough. I brought the entire jewelry box to my husband, Lucas, and set it on the kitchen table. ‘Look,’ I said, opening the lid to reveal the chaotic mess inside. ‘I untangled these just yesterday. And now they’re knotted again. This isn’t me.’ Lucas stared at the necklaces, his brow furrowed. He picked one up, a thin gold chain that was cinched into a tight, deliberate knot—not a random tangle, but something that looked almost intentional, like a sailor’s knot. ‘It’s probably just the humidity,’ he said, but his voice lacked conviction. ‘You need to store them better.’ I shook my head, frustration mounting. ‘It’s not the humidity, Lucas. Something in this house is doing this.’

We argued that night, the first of many. Lucas dismissed my complaints as stress, my imagination running wild after too many creepy stories. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was watching me, something that wanted to keep me busy, to trap me in a cycle of untangling. I started sleeping with the jewelry box under my bed, but even then, the knots would reappear. I’d wake in the middle of the night to the sound of chains clinking softly, like a whisper of metal against metal. I’d reach for the box, but the moment my fingers touched it, the sound would stop.

One evening, after a particularly vicious fight about my ‘obsession,’ I decided to set up a camera. I positioned it to face the dresser where I kept the box, hidden behind a vase of dried flowers. The next morning, I reviewed the footage. At 3:17 AM, the dresser drawer slid open on its own. A shadowy shape, vaguely humanoid but too thin, too elongated, emerged from the darkness. It hovered over the jewelry box, its fingers—if they were fingers—manipulating the chains with a meticulous, deliberate motion, creating knots that I knew would take me an hour to undo. I watched in horror as it worked, its form flickering like a faulty light. Then, as if sensing my gaze through the lens, it turned its head directly toward the camera. It had no face, just a smooth, pale surface, but I felt its hunger.

I showed the footage to Lucas, my hands shaking. He paled, his skepticism crumbling. ‘We have to get out,’ he whispered. But as we gathered our things, the house seemed to close in. Doors slammed on their own. The lights flickered. And from my jewelry box, which I’d packed in my bag, I heard a faint, mocking laugh. I opened it to find every chain, every necklace, tied in an intricate, hellish pattern. And in the center, a tiny note, written in a script I didn’t recognize: ‘Until we meet again.’

We left that day, but I know it followed us. Even in our new apartment, sometimes I’ll open my jewelry box, and I’ll see a knot that wasn’t there before. And in the dark of night, I’ll hear the faint clinking of chains, and I’ll know: it’s still practicing, perfecting its art, waiting for the day when I won’t be able to untangle myself. The knots aren’t just in my necklaces anymore. They’re in my life, my marriage, my mind. And I don’t know how to untie them.
