The house on Thornwood Lane had been vacant for nearly a decade, its wooden floors warped by years of neglect. My sister Lena and I had come with our mother to drop off a few boxes before the official move, the air thick with dust that danced in the beam of our flashlights. We ventured into the hallway, our footsteps echoing on the bare boards, when Lena froze. She pointed at the floor, and there, in the fine layer of gray dust, were four distinct wet footprints, as if someone had just walked through with soaked socks. No rain had fallen, and every window and door was bolted shut. We searched every room, every closet, but the house was empty. We told Mom, who dismissed it as a neighbor checking the place, but Lena and I knew better. We never spoke of it again.

Months later, during renovations, we discovered a small urn tucked into a forgotten alcove, half-hidden beneath a tarp. It contained the ashes of the previous owner’s grandmother, a woman named Agnes who had died in this very house. Mom, ever respectful, refused to discard the ashes. So when the contractors sealed off the old fireplace in Lena’s room with a new wall, she placed the urn inside, a secret entombment.

A month ago, Lena was at our cousin’s house for the weekend, and Mom was working late. I was in my room, headphones on, when I heard a faint dripping sound. At first, I dismissed it as a leaky pipe, but the sound was rhythmic, almost like footsteps. I pulled off my headphones and listened. The dripping stopped. Then it resumed, now coming from the hallway. I opened my door and saw a line of wet footprints leading from the front door, down the corridor, and into Lena’s room. The door was closed, but I knew no one was there. I crept forward, my heart pounding. The footprints ended at the wall where the urn was sealed, and I pressed my ear to the plaster. I could hear a faint, muffled sobbing.

That night, I couldn’t sleep. I lay in bed, listening. Around 3 AM, I heard the sound of splashing, as if someone was walking through a puddle. I grabbed my flashlight and went to investigate. The hallway was dry, but in Lena’s room, the wall was damp, water seeping from the seams. I touched it, and my hand came away wet, and it wasn’t water—it was cold, sticky, like condensation from a cry. Then, from inside the wall, a voice whispered, not quite audible, but unmistakably human. It was Agnes, and she was pleading to be let out.

I woke Mom, but she thought I was having a nightmare. She checked the room, but the wall was dry, and she told me to go back to bed. I tried to forget, but the next morning, I found Lena’s room flooded. The floor was soaked, and the new wall was dripping with moisture. A faint smell of decay filled the air. We had to tear the wall open to find the source of the leak. Inside, the urn had cracked, and ash was mixed with water, creating a dark sludge that had seeped into the floorboards. As we cleaned, I noticed the water in the sludge formed the shape of a handprint on the wood, and it felt cold to the touch.

Now, whenever I walk past that room, I feel a chill, and I hear the faint drips. I know Agnes is still there, her ashes disturbed, her spirit restless. I’ve tried to seal the room off, but it does no good. The dampness spreads, and at night, I hear the footsteps again, coming from the hallway, walking toward my door. I’ve locked it, but the footprints always end at my threshold, as if she’s waiting for me to let her in. And some nights, I swear I see the outline of a woman in the wet stains on the floor, her head bowed, as if in prayer. But when I look closer, she’s gone, and the only trace is the damp imprint left behind.
