For over a decade, I have called Maple Lane home, nestled in the heart of Eldridge, a quiet town in the countryside. Although I’ve lived here for years, the unsettling occurrences began only about three years ago. My house is situated near the edge of Eldridge Park, a lush green space that attracts many visitors. Between my street and the park lies a narrow trail known to locals as ‘The Greenway’. This path winds through the trees and leads to various neighborhoods.

It was on this very trail that the legend of the Crying Lady emerged.

Initially, when the strange sounds started in the spring of 2020, my family thought it was simply a lost animal. However, as time passed, it became clear that something more mysterious was at play. The most recent incident occurred on a chilly night in November 2022, around 2:45 AM. The voice of a woman could be heard, calling out for help, her cries echoing through the stillness. Sometimes, a softer voice would join hers, but it never seemed to be quite as strong.

As weeks turned into months, more neighbors reported hearing the same haunting calls. Curiosity turned into fear as stories circulated about the lady’s plight. Some claimed she was searching for a lost child, while others believed she was trapped in a moment of sorrow.

Despite the fear, a few brave souls ventured out to investigate. Each time, they returned with stories of their own, claiming to have seen a shadowy figure near the trees along the trail, always just out of reach, always sorrowful.

As the seasons changed, so did the nature of the cries. In winter, they were softer, almost like a lullaby, while in the summer, they grew more urgent, filling the night air with a sense of impending doom. Now, many of us leave our windows closed tight at night, hoping to drown out the sound that has become a part of our lives.

No one knows who the Crying Lady is or why she lingers on the Greenway, but her story has woven itself into the fabric of our community. We may never find the truth, but her cries remind us of the mysteries that linger in the shadows of Eldridge.
