The old farmhouse creaked under the weight of an oppressive February wind, a stark contrast to the usual hushed solitude of late winter. Elias, a student weary from an all-nighter studying for his advanced calculus final, sought refuge in the early embrace of sleep. His family’s property bordered a vast, ancient pine forest, a place that had always stirred an unsettling awareness in him – a prickling sensation of being observed. Tonight, however, the feeling was a palpable pressure, a cold dread that made the hairs on his arms stand on end. He peered out the frosted windowpane, his breath misting the glass, and thought he saw dark, indistinct shapes shifting beyond the reach of the porch light. Dismissing it as fatigue playing tricks on his eyes, he retreated to the relative safety of his bedroom.

As sleep claimed him, the familiar tendrils of a dream began to unfurl. He found himself running, not through his familiar woods, but through a tangled, snow-laden expanse under a moonless sky. The air was frigid, each gasp burning his lungs. He sensed a relentless pursuit, a presence just out of sight, pushing him deeper into the desolate landscape. He risked a glance backward, but the darkness was absolute, swallowing any hint of his pursuer. Exhausted, he stumbled to a halt, the icy ground biting at his bare feet. He turned, searching the inky blackness. Then, a chilling stillness descended. Before he could process the sudden quiet, rough hands clamped down on his wrists with a viselike grip, the sensation of ice-cold skin seeping into his own. The pain was agonizingly real, far too vivid for a mere dream.

Elias jolted awake, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. The room was silent, the only sound his own ragged breathing. A phantom chill still clung to his skin. He looked down at his hands, intending to rub the lingering numbness away, and froze. There, stark against the pallor of his skin, were two angry, circular bruises on each wrist, vividly imprinted with the unmistakable shape of fingers, tinged an alarming shade of crimson. The nightmare had left its mark. To this day, the simple act of another person’s touch on his wrists sends a jolt of primal terror through him, a constant, chilling reminder of the night the forest claimed more than just his dreams.
