In the fall of 2008, I was house-sitting for my brother, Marcus, in the old Victorian on Oak Street. He was on his honeymoon with his new wife, and I offered to look after their three cats and the drafty old place. I’d never liked that house—it had a smell of damp wood and something faintly metallic, like old pennies. But Marcus had asked, and my own apartment was being fumigated.

The spare bedroom was at the end of a long hallway, directly opposite the master suite. I’d stayed there once before, a few years back, when I’d visited Marcus during college. That night, I had the weirdest dream—or not a dream, but a feeling of being watched. I’d shrugged it off as a creaky old house. Now, I was older, and the house seemed even more oppressive.

I woke up at 3:17 AM, the red numbers on the clock searing into my eyes. There was a sound coming from the hallway—a rhythmic, heavy thud, like someone walking with deliberate slowness, each step landing with a solid weight. The floorboards groaned under the pressure. I froze. My heart hammered against my ribs. I knew I had locked the front door and the back door before going to bed. The only other person was my brother, and he was in the Caribbean.

The footsteps grew closer. They stopped right outside my door. I could hear breathing—low, ragged, like a smoker. Then, the doorknob turned with a soft, agonizing click. The door swung inward, letting in a sliver of dim hallway light. I lay on my right side, facing the wall, my back to the door. I could feel a presence enter the room, a weight that made the air thick and cold.

Panic seized me. I didn’t dare move. The footsteps resumed, but slower now, each one a creak of wood under a massive load. They came around the side of the bed, and I felt a shadow fall over me. The bed dipped as if a heavy body leaned onto the mattress, right next to my hip. The springs sang a mournful note. I inched closer to the wall, pressing my body against the cold plaster. The weight shifted, following me. The dip in the mattress moved closer, the pressure nearly pressing me into the wall.

I reached for my phone on the nightstand, my fingers shaky. I found it and dialed Marcus’s number, knowing he wouldn’t answer. But my fingers were clumsy, and I accidentally called the landline in the kitchen. It started to ring. The weight on the bed became heavier, as if whatever it was was leaning over me, curious about the sound. The ring stopped on the third ring. Silence. The weight seemed to ease a fraction.

Desperate, I tried to figure out what to do. My brother had told me to keep the window open a crack for ventilation, but I had closed it. I thought about the old stories—the house was built on land that used to be a burial ground for a hospital. But that was just a legend.

The thing on the bed shifted. I felt a cold draft on my neck, as if something was breathing right behind my ear. A low, guttural growl, barely a whisper, but deep like a bear. That was it. I scrambled away from the wall, rolling off the bed on the opposite side, landing hard on the wooden floor. I didn’t look back. I sprinted for the door, out into the hall, down the stairs, and out the front door into the chilly October night. I didn’t stop until I was at the all-night diner four blocks away, breathless and shaking.

When I told the waitress what had happened, she smiled grimly and said, ‘Oh, you met the creeper. That’s what we call it. It’s been here for years. Drives renters out. Good thing you left.’ I never went back. Marcus sold the house a year later. And to this day, I can’t sleep facing the wall, because I still feel that weight pressing against my back, that suffocating presence that had come to claim me.
