I never told anyone about the tremors. Not the small ones that rattled the coffee cups, or the deep, groaning vibrations that seemed to rise from the floorboards themselves. I thought it was the old plumbing, or the subway line that ran three blocks away. But after yesterday, I knew it was something else.

It was a Tuesday, dull and gray. I was lying on the couch, scrolling through my phone, when the couch began to shake. Not a gentle sway, but a violent jolt, like a giant hand had grabbed the frame and tried to flip it. I threw my phone, grabbed the armrest, and held on until it stopped. My heart was pounding, and I sat up, staring at the empty room. My husband, Sam, had texted me minutes earlier, asking if I was okay. I replied, ‘I’m fine, just tired.’ But I wasn’t fine. The bedroom had felt wrong for weeks—cold spots, shifting curtains, a sense of being watched. That afternoon, I’d moved to the couch as a refuge. Now the couch itself had betrayed me.

Today, my sister Lena came over. She’s the only one who takes my fears seriously. We sat in the living room, the TV droning, but our conversation was hushed, like we were afraid to disturb something. Then, from the kitchen, came a rustling sound. Plastic, crinkling. I froze. ‘It’s the cat,’ Lena said, but I shook my head. Our cat, Whiskers, was sound asleep on a blanket in the hallway, curled into a tight orange ball. The kitchen was adjacent to the living room, but the sound was too close, too deliberate. We called out, ‘Hello?’ No answer. The rustling stopped. Lena’s face had gone pale. ‘That was weird,’ she whispered.

We tried to laugh it off, but the unease clung to us. I told Lena, ‘This kind of thing happens all the time when I’m alone. Yesterday, the couch shook. I thought it was an earthquake, but there was no earthquake.’ Lena’s eyes widened. She was about to reply when a loud BANG came from the kitchen, like a cabinet door slamming. We both jumped. This time, we got up and crept toward the kitchen. The plastic bag that had been rustling was now lying on the floor, its contents scattered: a few apples, a loaf of bread, and a bag of rice, as if someone had tossed it aside. But there was no one there. The back door was locked from the inside.

We moved back to the living room, our backs to each other, scanning the room. The TV flickered, and for a split second, I saw a reflection in the dark screen: a tall, gaunt figure standing behind us. I spun around, but nothing was there. Lena grabbed my arm. ‘Did you see that?’ she asked, her voice trembling. I nodded, unable to speak.

We decided to leave the apartment and go to a café down the street. As we grabbed our coats, the couch began to shake again—this time more violently, sliding across the floor. We ran out of the apartment, down the stairs, and into the street, gasping for air. Lena pulled out her phone to call Sam, but the screen went black. She shook it, and a message appeared: ‘This is my home now. Leave or become part of it.’

We never went back. We stayed at Lena’s place for a week, but the tremors followed us there. They started as small vibrations in the floor, then escalated to knocks in the walls. And every night, I saw the figure in my dreams, its hollow eyes fixed on me, its mouth opening to speak words I couldn’t hear.

Sam thinks I’m overreacting. He came to get my things and said the apartment felt fine. But I know what I felt. That couch wasn’t just shaking. It was a heartbeat, a pulse of something ancient and hungry. And I fear it’s still waiting for me to return, because it knows I’ll have to go back someday.
