We moved into the old Pemberton place three months ago, a sprawling Victorian that had stood empty for decades. My name is Ella, and I came with my mom, her boyfriend Carl, and my younger brother, Timmy. The house was a fixer-upper, but it had character, or so we thought.

The first night, I was unpacking dishes in the kitchen, the ceramic clinking in the silence, when I heard it—a soft, rhythmic thumping from the cellar door to my right. I froze, listening. It sounded like someone pacing down there, their steps heavy on the wooden stairs. I called out, ‘Hello?’ but the sound stopped. I opened the door, peered into the darkness, and saw nothing. Shrugging it off as old house settling, I continued.

A few days later, Carl came downstairs with a pale face. He said he’d seen a girl in a gingham dress, vintage 1950s, standing at the top of the basement stairs. She smiled and said, ‘Hi.’ He thought it was a prank, but no one else was home. I told him he was seeing things, but a chill ran down my spine.

Then the Zippo incidents started. Carl is a smoker and always carries his brass Zippo. In the middle of the night, I’d hear the distinctive click-clack of it opening and snapping shut, echoing from my parents’ room. I’d check, but Carl was asleep, and the lighter was in his pocket. One morning, it was missing. We searched everywhere, and finally found it in my boot, sitting on the floor of my closet, as if placed there. Carl’s face went white. He said, ‘I didn’t put that there.’

A week ago, Timmy started complaining about a ‘creaky lady’ who whispered to him at night. We dismissed it as nightmares, but then he drew a picture of a woman with hollow eyes and a key around her neck. That gave me the creeps.

The real horror began when we discovered the copper key behind the loose board in the pantry. It was old and tarnished, fitting a small iron lock on the floor of the basement, hidden under a rug. When I turned the key, the floor slid open, revealing a narrow staircase that descended into pitch blackness, and a cold draft wafted up, smelling of earth and decay.

We all went down, Carl holding a flashlight, Timmy clutching my hand. At the bottom, we found a small room, walls lined with shelves of dusty jars, each containing a dark, viscous liquid and something floating—a hair, a tooth, a fingernail. In the center was a wooden chair with leather straps, and on a small table, a rusted key, similar to the one we had found, but larger.

Then we heard footsteps above us. Heavy, slow, coming down the basement stairs. We scrambled back up, but when we reached the top, the door was shut, and the keyhole was jammed. We were trapped. The lights flickered, and in the dim, I saw her—a woman in a tattered dress, her face obscured by long black hair, holding a lantern. She smiled, revealing yellowed teeth, and whispered, ‘You found my room. Now you stay.’

Carl tried to shove past her, but she vanished, and the air grew cold. We pounded on the door, but it wouldn’t budge. Then the jars began to rattle, and the liquid inside started to bubble. The woman’s voice echoed, ‘One of you will join my collection.’

We spent hours down there, huddled together, until dawn broke and the door opened by itself. We fled upstairs, grabbed our bags, and left, never to return. But even now, I still hear the click-clack of a Zippo in the dark, and I see her standing at the top of the stairs, smiling, as if she knows I’ll be back.

And in my pocket, I still carry the copper key.
