The old music box sat on the mantelpiece, a silent sentinel in Elias’s otherwise quiet apartment. It had belonged to his Aunt Lenora, a woman whose life had been a tapestry of unfinished symphonies and half-composed lullabies. Elias had inherited it, along with the unsettling feeling that a part of her had never truly departed. His friends, a boisterous group, often gathered at his place, but their laughter would invariably dwindle, replaced by furtive glances and a palpable sense of unease.

One rain-slicked evening, Maya, his closest friend, was over for a film marathon. Midway through a particularly tense scene, Elias noticed Maya’s eyes darting towards the corners of the room, her skin prickling with a visible chill. He paused the movie, concern etching his brow. “You okay? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.” Maya shivered, pulling her cardigan tighter. “It’s just… this constant feeling of being observed. And the cold. It’s like winter decided to set up permanent residence in this room.”

They tried to recapture the movie’s momentum, but the oppressive atmosphere thickened with each passing minute. A faint, almost imperceptible melody, like the ghost of a forgotten waltz, seemed to weave itself into the silence. It was then that Elias confided in Maya about his Aunt Lenora and the persistent feeling that she lingered, her essence somehow tethered to the music box. “Maybe she’s just… listening,” Maya suggested, her voice hushed. “Maybe she misses her music. Why don’t you try… inviting her in?”

Elias, though skeptical, turned towards the mantelpiece, his gaze fixed on the ornate box. “Aunt Lenora,” he said, his voice barely a whisper, “this is Maya. She likes your music.”

An unnerving silence descended, deeper and more profound than before. Then, as if a phantom hand had graced the tiny keys, the music box sprang to life, not with its usual tinny chime, but with a resonant, melancholic melody that filled the apartment. It was a tune Elias had never heard, hauntingly beautiful and achingly sad, a symphony of forgotten notes. Maya’s shivers subsided, replaced by a strange sense of peace. The feeling of being watched vanished, leaving only the spectral strains of the music box. As Maya prepared to leave later that night, she looked back at the music box, a soft smile on her face. “She likes me,” Maya murmured, a hint of wonder in her tone. Elias simply nodded, the melody continuing its mournful serenade, a testament to the collector of unfinished melodies who had finally found an audience.
