I’m 24, and I live in a rented basement flat in an old converted warehouse. It’s a big, one-bedroom place, but the bedroom is at the back, with a small window that looks out onto a light well. I’ve been here for about a year, and it’s always been fine, but a few weeks ago a water leak in the ceiling forced me to move my bed into the living room, which is at the front of the flat. The living room is bigger, but it has these huge industrial windows that face the street, and it’s always been the warmest room in the place. I prefer the bedroom because it’s darker and quieter, but since I had to clear out the bedroom for repairs, I had to set up a temporary bed in the living room.
Right away, I noticed that the living room felt different. Not just warmer, but heavier, if that makes sense. The air seemed thick, like there was a pressure in the room. I’m a sound sleeper, but the first night, I kept tossing and turning. I’d drift off, then jolt awake, my heart pounding, with the sense that something had just brushed against my face, or whispered my name. I’d listen, but all I could hear was the distant hum of the city and the occasional car passing by. I figured it was just the new environment, the street noise, the lack of my usual dark room. So I put on a sleep mask and tried to ignore it.
But it got worse. Every night, around 3 AM, I’d wake up with a start. Not scared, exactly, but alert, as if I were being watched. I’d lie there, staring at the ceiling, feeling this weird pressure on my chest, like something was pushing down on me. I couldn’t move, couldn’t speak, just a heavy paralysis. It would last for a few seconds, then lift, and I’d gasp for air. I chalked it up to sleep paralysis, which I’d heard about, but I’d never experienced it before. I didn’t mention it to anyone, because it sounded nuts, and I’m not the type to get spooked easily.
Then, last week, I woke up in the middle of the night, and the room was colder than it should have been. The heating was on, but there was a chill in the air, like a draft from somewhere. I sat up, and that’s when I saw it: a shape in the corner of the room. It was just a darker patch against the darkness, but it seemed to be solid, not just a shadow. It was roughly human-sized, but with no discernible features. As I stared, it seemed to shift, to move slightly closer. My heart hammered. I wanted to scream, but I couldn’t make a sound. Then it was gone, like it had never been there. I turned on the light, and the room was empty.
After that, I started paying attention to the room itself. It’s a big, open space, but the corner where I saw the shape felt cold, even when the rest of the room was warm. I put my hand on the wall there, and it was like touching ice. I checked the windows, the radiators, everything. There was no logical explanation. I also noticed that the floorboards in that corner creaked, even when I wasn’t walking on them, like someone was standing there. I tried to ignore it, but it was hard to sleep knowing that something might be in the room with me.
I decided to do some research. The warehouse was built in the 1920s, and before it was converted, it was a textile factory. There were several accidents reported, including a fire in the 1950s that killed three workers. I started wondering if maybe something had been left behind, some kind of residue. I’m not a believer in ghosts, but I can’t explain what I’ve been experiencing. The weird thing is, it only happens in the living room. The bedroom, even with the repairs, feels fine now. But I have to sleep in the living room until the work is done, and I’m starting to dread the night.
Last night, I woke up again at 3:03 AM, according to my phone. The room was freezing, and I could see my breath. The pressure on my chest was back, heavier than before. I tried to turn my head, and I could just make out the shape again, standing at the foot of my bed. This time, it had a face. It wasn’t human, not really. It was a pale, hollow face, with dark pits for eyes, and a mouth that was open in a silent scream. It seemed to be leaning over me, getting closer, until its face was inches from mine. I could feel a cold breath on my skin, like the air from a grave. I wanted to close my eyes, but I couldn’t. I was trapped.
Then, just as suddenly, it was gone. The pressure lifted, and I could move again. I sat up, gasping, drenched in sweat. The room was back to normal temperature, and the silence was deafening. But I noticed something on the floor by my bed: a small, black feather. I’ve never seen a feather like that before, and there are no birds in the warehouse. I picked it up, and it was ice cold, and it stayed cold even as I held it. I don’t know what to do. I can’t afford to move, and the repairs won’t be done for another week. But I’m terrified to sleep in that room again. I’ve been drinking coffee and staying up, but I can’t keep that up forever.
I’m writing this now, at 2 AM, from the kitchen. The living room is down the hall, and I can see the door, which I’ve left ajar. There’s a light on in there, but I keep feeling like I need to look, to check if something is waiting. I know this sounds insane, but I need to know if anyone else has gone through something like this. What is this thing? Is it a ghost, or something else? And how do I get rid of it? I’m at my wit’s end, and I don’t know where else to turn. If you have any advice, please help. I don’t think I can spend another night in that room.
