The night air in my studio apartment was thick with the smell of old books and the faint hum of the city outside. I’d always felt safe here, despite the unsettling history I’d had with the place. But tonight, with my friend Elara over, the air felt charged, like before a thunderstorm.

Elara was the type who could walk into a room and tell you if it was haunted. She’d always been attuned to things I couldn’t see. I’d learned to trust her instincts, though I never fully understood them. We were sprawled on the floor, listening to records, when she found a small light-up ball under my bed. It was a cheap plastic sphere that glowed in pulsing colors, probably left by the previous tenant’s kid. She tossed it up and down, laughing as it changed hues, and then set it down on the floor near my stereo speaker.

On top of that speaker sat a polished piece of rose quartz, a gift from my mother, who was a folk healer back in the old country. She’d blessed it to keep the darker spirits at bay. I had a strict rule: no one touches the crystal. Elara knew this. But when I glanced over a few minutes later, the ball was resting directly on the crystal. I dropped my book and shouted, ‘Elara, what did you do?’

She looked genuinely confused, her face pale in the dim light. ‘I swear, I didn’t put it there. I just set it down by the speaker, and I’ve been looking at my phone since.’ Anger and fear boiled in my chest. ‘Don’t lie to me! No one but you could have moved it.’ She insisted she hadn’t, and I let it go, mumbling that I’d have my mom re-bless the crystal tomorrow.

A couple of hours passed in uneasy silence. The rain began to tap against the window, a steady rhythm that seemed to underscore the tension. Then Elara gasped. ‘I just saw a dark shadow in the mirror,’ she whispered, pointing to the full-length mirror by the closet. I looked, but saw only our reflections under the dim lamp. ‘It was there, behind us, for a moment,’ she insisted. ‘It had no face.’

My blood ran cold. A year ago, I had encountered something malicious in this very apartment. It had felt like a weight pressing down on my chest, whispering threats I couldn’t quite hear. I’d barely escaped its influence after my mother performed a cleansing. This felt like its return.

As Elara’s words hung in the air, the light-up ball rolled off the crystal and fell to the floor, emitting a low buzzing sound. It then began to move across the room on its own, stopping at my feet. I screamed and kicked it away. It rolled back, faster this time, as if it were being guided. Elara’s face was a mask of terror. ‘It’s not me,’ she said. ‘I’m not doing that.’

Then the lamp flickered. The room plunged into darkness. In the mirror, I saw a shape detach from the shadows and start to move toward us. It was tall, indistinct, like smoke coalesced into a humanoid form. My instincts screamed at me to run, but I was frozen. Elara grabbed my arm and pulled me toward the door. As we ran, I saw the crystal on the speaker shatter as if struck by an invisible force.

We burst into the hallway, and the door slammed shut behind us. The apartment was silent, but I knew it wasn’t over. I called my mother, my hands shaking as I explained what happened. She told me to stay with Elara and that she would be on the next flight.

When my mother arrived, she found the crystal in pieces. She said that the ball had been a vessel for a wandering spirit, and that by moving it onto the crystal, it had been ‘fed’ by the crystal’s energy, allowing it to manifest. She performed a cleansing, burning dried herbs throughout the apartment. During the ritual, I saw the shadow in the mirror again, this time with a face—Elara’s face. My mother said that the spirit had latched onto Elara, not me, and that it had been following her for months without her knowing.

After the cleansing, Elara and I never spoke again. I moved out a month later. But sometimes, I still see the afterimage of that light-up ball rolling across the floor, and I wonder if the spirit ever truly left. I only know that I will never trust a light-up ball again.
