My grandmother, Elara, was a clockmaker, and she left me her entire estate, including her old house in the rural town of Ashford Hollow. I had only visited her a few times as a child, and I remembered the house as a creaky, dark place filled with ticking clocks. After she passed, I inherited it, and my boyfriend, Marcus, suggested we live there to save money. I was hesitant, but he insisted it would be perfect for us. So, we packed our bags and moved into Gran’s house.

From the first night, I felt an odd presence. The house was so quiet, yet I heard faint ticking even when all the clocks were stopped. Marcus thought I was imagining things. But then, small things began to happen. I’d set down my keys, and they’d appear in another room. A book would fall from a shelf for no reason. At night, I’d hear soft footsteps in the hallway, but when I checked, no one was there.

One evening, I was in the kitchen, and the pendulum of a grandfather clock in the living room swung wildly on its own, even though I had reset it earlier. The chimes sounded at odd hours. I felt a cold draft, and the hairs on my arm stood up. I told Marcus, but he laughed it off, saying it was just an old house settling.

That same night, I woke to a soft ticking right beside my ear. I turned, and saw a small, antique pocket watch on the nightstand, one that had belonged to Gran. It was ticking, but it had been broken for years. I picked it up, and the ticking stopped. I felt a chill, as if someone was watching me. I looked around the room, and in the dim light, I saw a shadowy figure standing in the corner. It was a woman, but her face was blurred, and she was pointing at the watch. Then she was gone.

I knew I had to find out what this was. I searched the house, and in a hidden drawer in Gran’s study, I found a diary. As I read it, I learned that Gran had a twin sister, Seraphina, who had died tragically in that house. Seraphina was a gifted clockmaker, and she had created a unique clock that could capture a person’s spirit. Gran, jealous of Seraphina’s talent, had tampered with the clock, causing an accident that killed Seraphina. The diary revealed that Seraphina’s spirit was trapped in the clock, and she wanted revenge.

I went to the clock in the living room, the one that seemed to act on its own. I found a hidden compartment, and inside was a small, ornate key. The pocket watch from the nightstand seemed to fit the keyhole. I turned the key, and the clock began to spin wildly. The room grew cold, and Seraphina’s voice echoed around me: ‘You must free me from this curse.’

I realized that only by destroying the clock could I release her spirit. But Marcus, who had come to see what was happening, became possessed by Seraphina’s spirit. His eyes turned black, and he lunged at me. I fought him off and grabbed a heavy brass candlestick. With all my might, I smashed the clock. The glass shattered, and the hands flew off. A blinding light filled the room, and then everything went silent.

When I came to, Marcus was on the floor, unconscious but breathing. The clock was destroyed, and the house felt still. I never saw Seraphina again. Marcus woke up with no memory of what had happened. We moved out and never returned. But sometimes, I still hear the faint ticking of a clock, and I wonder if Seraphina truly found peace, or if her spirit lingers, waiting for another chance to be released. I keep that pocket watch, a reminder of the clockmaker’s legacy, and the ghost that nearly consumed us.
