Three years ago, I was staying at my friend Mara’s apartment for the weekend. We had been up late, binge-watching horror films until nearly 2 AM, and then we turned off the lights and settled into our sleeping bags on her living room floor. Her roommate, Celia, had gone to bed hours earlier, but she popped out to say goodnight and grab a glass of water before her shift at the hospital the next morning. About twenty minutes later, we heard a noise from the kitchen, which was just a few steps from the living room. It sounded like someone was rummaging through the cabinets, pulling out pots and pans, and then setting them down with a heavy clatter. Then came the unmistakable sound of silverware being dropped into a drawer, and the creak of the floorboards as if someone were pacing back and forth. The noise continued for what felt like an eternity, maybe fifteen minutes, and then stopped abruptly. I lay there, frozen, listening to my own heartbeat. Mara’s breathing was shallow, but she didn’t say a word.

In the morning, we exchanged nervous glances over bowls of cereal. Neither of us had dared to speak about it the night before, each hoping the other would confirm it was just a dream. Finally, I asked Mara if she had heard anything, and she nodded slowly. ‘I thought it was Celia, but she would have been in her room,’ she whispered. We decided to ask Celia directly. When we did, she looked at us with a puzzled expression and said, ‘After I got my water, I went straight to bed. I was dead asleep within minutes. Maybe it was the upstairs neighbors?’ But we knew the upstairs neighbors were away on vacation; their unit was empty. The only other explanation was that the sounds were somehow not from our kitchen at all, but from something that lived in between the walls, mimicking the clatter of human activity. To this day, whenever I hear the clatter of cups in a quiet kitchen, I can’t help but hold my breath and listen for the telltale pause before the next sound, wondering if it will be followed by the soft creak of footsteps coming closer.
