It began with a bad feeling, a dread that settled in my bones. I was with my parents and my sister, standing beside our old blue car. They wanted me to get in, but a deep fear told me not to. I pulled away and scrambled out through the open door, ignoring my father’s raised voice.

Suddenly, the scene changed. We were on a wide, empty road under a pale sky. A single police car was parked nearby, its lights spinning silently. An officer was speaking with my family, their faces drawn and worried. I stood apart, a rough cloth around my shoulders.

I turned and ran. I heard my father’s footsteps pounding behind me, and a terrible certainty filled me—he meant me harm. For a while, I was fast, putting distance between us. But then my legs grew heavy, as if I were trying to run through deep water. My speed faded until I could barely move at all.
