In the humid summer of 1994, my mother, Elaine, was a regular at ‘SunKissed Tanning’, a small salon tucked between a dry cleaner and a 24-hour diner in the outskirts of Tucson. She’d go three times a week, seeking that perfect bronze glow, and would often doze off in the warm embrace of the UV lamps.

One sweltering Tuesday afternoon, as the machine hummed above her and the lights bathed her in orange, she closed her eyes. In the hazy space between consciousness and sleep, a figure materialized before her. He was a man, but his skin was a horror—peeling, blackened, with cracks that glowed like dying embers. His eye sockets were empty pits, yet she felt his gaze bore into her. His mouth moved, and a voice, dry as ash, filled her mind: ‘Tell Jessica I love her. Tell her I’m sorry. Tell her I’ll always love my first.’

The words clung to her like smoke. Elaine snapped her eyes open, heart pounding, but the room was empty. She hurriedly wiped off the lotion, dressed, and walked to the front desk, a knot in her stomach. The receptionist, a bored teenager named Dana, was flipping through a magazine. Elaine hesitated, then asked, ‘Do you know a Jessica?’

Dana looked up, surprised. ‘Yeah, my friend’s daughter. Little girl, maybe six. Lives a few blocks away. Why?’

Elaine swallowed. ‘I just… had a strange feeling. Do you know if anyone close to her died recently? Someone who was burned?’

Dana’s face paled. ‘Her dad. He was killed by lightning last month. Horrible accident—he was out golfing, storm came out of nowhere. They said he was burnt black.’

Elaine felt a chill despite the heat. She gave Dana her number and asked her to pass it along. A few days later, a woman named Carla called, her voice tight with grief. She was Jessica’s mother. They met at a coffee shop, and Elaine recounted her vision, the charred man’s plea. Carla broke down, the dam of tears finally giving way. ‘He had a daughter from a previous relationship,’ she sobbed. ‘Her name was Jessica too. He hadn’t seen her in years. We never told our Jessica about her half-sister. He always called his first daughter his ‘first love’. He died with that regret.’

Elaine sat there, numb, as Carla revealed the story of Arthur—how he’d been a loving father to his firstborn, but the relationship with the mother soured, and he was shut out. He spiraled into alcohol and guilt, never able to reach out, until he met Carla and started anew, but the wound never healed. The lightning strike, the burn, the final message—it all made a terrible, beautiful sense.

Weeks later, Elaine found herself at a small memorial for Arthur. The yard was filled with flowers and people. A little girl with pigtails clutched a teddy bear. Carla’s Jessica. Elaine approached, knelt, and said softly, ‘Your daddy wanted me to tell you he loves you, and he’s sorry.’ The girl looked at her with wide, trusting eyes, and hugged her so tight it ached.

That night, Elaine lay in bed, replaying the moment. She felt a peace she hadn’t expected, but as she drifted off, she saw the charred man again, his face now softened, a hint of a smile. He mouthed ‘Thank you’ before fading. She never went back to that tanning salon. The memory lingered, but it was a bittersweet one—proof that even from the ashes of tragedy, love could find a way to speak.

Years later, when Elaine told me this story, she’d choke up. ‘I still don’t know why he chose me,’ she’d whisper. ‘But maybe some messages are meant to be delivered, even by strangers.’ And I’d think about that charred visitor, carrying a father’s last wish through the veil, and I’d shiver—not from fear, but from the wonder that the bonds of love are stronger than death itself.
