In the sweltering heat of a Queensland summer, I lay in my rented flat above a closed bakery, the ceiling fan stirring air thick with flour and dust. My name is Marcus, and I’ve always been a skeptic, but the silence of that night felt unnatural, as if the world itself was holding its breath.

At 2 AM, with the window open to catch a nonexistent breeze, sleep began to claim me. Then, a voice, not just loud but intrusive, as if someone had placed their mouth directly against my ear, shouted, ‘HEY!’ My eyes flew open, heart pounding against my ribs. The room was empty, the only light the pale glow from the streetlamp outside. I rationalized it as my imagination, a hypnic jerk, but the residue of that voice lingered, an echo that felt physical.

I turned onto my side, determined to sleep, when a second shout blasted, this time more like a sonic boom, rattling the window panes and sending a jarring vibration through the mattress. I sat up, grabbing my phone to check the time, my hands trembling. A cold dread settled over me, and I decided to keep the lights on—not that it helped.

The ceiling light, which I always leave on, began to flicker. At first, I thought it was a voltage fluctuation, but then it turned off completely, plunging the room into darkness. Before I could reach for the switch, it snapped back on, then off, on, off, in a rapid staccato that seemed to mimic a heartbeat. This happened five times, each flicker feeling like a pulse of malevolence, then it stopped, and the light remained steady, mocking my fear.

I grabbed my keys, ready to flee, when I noticed the dust motes in the light beam—they were swirling, defying the still air, forming a spiral that pointed towards my bedroom door. My name—a childish nickname ‘Marc’—was spelled out in the dust, then it all collapsed into a heap. A cold spot moved through the room, and I could feel an invisible presence watching me, not hostile, but curious.

I spent the rest of the night in my car, too afraid to look back. In the morning, I returned to find the flat as I had left, but the light bulb was shattered on the floor, the glass in the shape of a cross. I never learned what it was—ghost, demon, or something else—but the memory of that voice, that rhythm, still haunts me. I now sleep with a nightlight, but always, at 2 AM, I wake to the sound of a whispered ‘HEY’, and the flicker of my lamp, as if it’s trying to communicate, and I’m too terrified to listen.
